Hi! I'm Rachel. I have a pretty relaxed teaching style and adapt well to all kinds of students. I really aim for students to understand concepts rather than make great test scores. However, great test scores are a good side effect of understanding concepts better.

I am a graduate cum laude of Abilene Christian University with a bachelor of arts in History and a minor in English. I have worked as an assistant editor and have plans to continue onto graduate school with a specialization in the American Gilded Age.As a tutor, I prefer to emphasize critical thinking and technique over memorization. A student who memorizes the answers can pass a test, but a student who knows how to effectively research and problem-solve can excel in anything they do. My goal is to help my students learn critical thinking and to enjoy learning as well as become proficient in their subject. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing short stories, and playing and designing tabletop games.

I graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in May of 2018. I majored in Astrophysics with a Chinese minor. I decided to take two years off and work at a non profit aimed to help underrepresented students get access to opportunities and resources not readily available in their community. There I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to contribute and give back to the Lancaster community by creating my own 12-week engineering and coding course for the scholars in the program. These experiences inspired me to continue my education and attain my Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. I love tutoring and mentoring because it provides me with the opportunity to pay it forward and support the next generation of leaders. Learning is an amazing experience but everyone is different, and as a teacher it is my role to cater to your learning style to show that nothing is too hard to master.

I'm currently pursuing a degree in Economic Consulting, Public Policy Analysis, and Legal Studies with a minor in Psychology through the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, respectively. While I'm very focused on economics and non-market risk mitigation currently, I remain interested in keeping my knowledge up to date in all fields from sciences to history to test prep. My philosophy in tutoring is to be as student focused as possible to help you learn the skills to get the grade and test scores you want and continue success.

I am excited to meet you! As a first generation college student, I have had the great fortune to teach and tutor students from all walks of life. I have been teaching and tutoring professionally since 2002. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in German Language and Culture from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University with a minor in Women's Studies. I hold a Master of Arts in German literature, culture, and sociolinguistics from the University of California at Berkeley where I was the recipient of the prestigious Eugene Cota-Robles Diversity Fellowship. I also hold a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology and Public Administration from Northern Arizona University. I have taught and tutored languages, public speaking, debate, English, and several other topics at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Arizona State University, University of Phoenix, Maricopa Community College District, Paradise Valley School District, Oakland Unified School District, in addition to private clients.I work very well with students for whom English is not a first language and with students who have a genuine desire to learn a topic. My experience with a wide range of students hailing from different socioeconomic, linguistic, cultural, and geographic backgrounds has shaped my tutoring style to be patient, respectful, humble, and engaging. My youngest tutee was 7 years old, and the oldest was 82. All age groups are very enjoyable to tutor. I don't make up answers and I let my students know if I need to research something in greater depth to answer the 'why' questions. The joy of seeing a student reach the point of understanding a topic which has been difficult for them in the past to be most rewarding.Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, public speaking, politics (I'm a self-professed political guru), hiking, spending time with my children, and working to serve the less fortunate in my community. Most exciting for me is seeing students succeed. I look forward to helping you in any way I am able.

I'm a recent graduate of Harvard University and a natural teacher, and I'd be thrilled to help you build your skills, gain academic confidence, and get results! My B.A. is in American history and literature with a minor in theater. I spent my college years producing and directing student theater, writing plays, giving campus tours, and researching and writing my honors thesis on art criticism in New York City in the late 1960s.Since moving to New York, I have continued to hone my playwriting skills. I also work as an apprentice at a theater company currently in residence at the Metropolitan Museum. Eventually, I hope to get my MFA in playwriting and/or my PhD in American Studies. In my free time, I love to cook and read novels.I design each tutoring session to meet student needs, but you always can expect a compassionate and humorous yet progress-driven approach from me. I'll help you break academic goals down into bite-sized, non-intimidating tasks-- my infectious energy has been known to make even the SAT seem fun and manageable. In addition to SAT, SAT II, PSAT, and AP test prep, I am an extremely experienced and capable writer and will help you structure and stylize your college admissions essay or school writing assignment such that your point is as salient and persuasive as possible.

Teaching is absolutely inspiring. Nothing beats the "ah ha" moment a student gets when he or she realizes that they can achieve what they deemed "impossible." People are capable of much more than they think, and, often, it just takes a little encouragement for people to reach new potentials. I want my students to make connections and discover how much fun learning can be.As a tutor I strive to engage, challenge, and inspire growth in my students.

During the day, I work as a civil and environmental engineer. The coalescence of my favorite subjects, physics and environmental studies, led me to engineering in order to improve the world we live in.As a child I did not plan on becoming an engineer. When I was 16, I fell in love with all things nature during an ecology trip and decided I was going pursue a career in environmental sciences. During my senior year of high school I decided to take AP Physics, and earned enough credit allowing me to skip the requirement once I started my college studies. AP Physics became the catalyst for my future career in engineering. The first time I took a physics I truly struggled with the material; but in AP Physics I learned how to study, apply knowledge to real world challenges, and that understanding core concepts is the greatest foundation one can have. Having my students attain these crucial skills is what I strive hardest to do as a tutor. My goal is to ensure my students have the knowledge and tools that will allow them to handle their work at hand, as well as, more difficult tasks they may encounter in the future.
