My name is Katie, and I am a recent graduate of Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor's degree in Math and a minor in Environmental Science.I have been tutoring for five years, and I love not only helping people learn new things, but to be constantly learning from young brilliant minds. I like to take a holistic approach to teaching, prioritizing strong interpersonal relationships and making sure the student feels comfortable in the tutoring space. I believe in the value of learning from mistakes and asking questions, and nobody is too young or too old to develop their math and critical thinking skills.

I moved to Las Vegas to attend UNLV about one year ago. I am in between junior and senior year and will be getting a criminal justice degree! I am fortunate to have taken a broad spectrum of different classes at the college level. My strongest for tutoring purposes are math, history, and writing (criminal justice classes are my strongest but I don't anticipate anyone reaching out for assistance in that area). In my spare time, I love being around and working with animals, traveling, hiking, swimming, painting, drawing, sculpture, reading, and doing anything with family. The environment in the Vegas Valley is significantly different than my small town in Washington, so I don't do as much wilderness exploration or see my family, since I moved here solo!I have 3 younger brothers. They are between the ages of 1 and 14, so I have the privilege of helping the 14 year old with his schoolwork whenever necessary. Aside from that, I have been a part of numerous study groups, one I actually started last semester for political science.Conclusively, I am rarely in a bad mood, and encourage family to be present during our sessions if desired! I do not pretend that I know everything, and will emphasize the importance of learning how to find information. I am very hands on and aim to bring joy and fun to every learning situation. I am open to working with any age, capping at first year college students. I look forward to engaging with you and having successful tutor sessions!

Teaching is about passion, not only a passion for the subject but for the desire to impart knowledge on your students that will stick with them for a lifetime and prepare them to be part of a new and evolving future. In those terms, teaching is a process of engaging students and empowering them to pursue their own learning. To accomplish this, a tutor has to wear many hats: that of a mentor, a cheerleader, an expert, and others. Many times in the Physical Science class it can seem like an extension of math, an endless list of numbers of formulas that are just given as absolutes. The truth is that being able to solve problems is much less important than understanding the underlying concepts present. Having an understanding of these concepts will make the mathematical work that is involved much easier. The role of a tutor is to reinforce the instruction of a student's teacher and build up a base of knowledge with the use of real world examples. My teaching style is deeply rooted in the idea that each student is a unique human being who has to be listened to and given adequate attention in order to reach his or her full potential. I believe that every student can learn to appreciate and enjoy even the most difficult subject if their teacher has prepared a lesson in the correct way.
