Elementary Math Tutoring review by Sterling in Chesterfield
The student and I had a great day reviewing elementary math with a focus on angles and proportions. To make proportions more accessible, I introduced he to cross multiplication to solve for an unknown. After a few attempts he began to grasp both solving for an unknown, and what different proportions represent conceptually. I would like to continue to review angles, proportions, basic division and cross multiplication over the next few weeks. The student is doing a great job with the subject matter, but we do need to keep practicing in order to really master these fundamental concepts. I am very proud of the work he is doing.

Today, I worked with the student on her 7 and 8 multiplication tables. We also practiced spelling out her vocabulary words orally as well as writing them out. Lastly, we continued reading Malory Towers, the book she has chosen for her book report. At the end of the session, she provided me with a summary of her understanding of the book thus far. We also made a list of vocabulary words from the book as well as the major events occurring with the characters in the book.

I first worked with the student on his homework today. We checked the homework of multiplications of two-digit numbers and arrays together. He was confused about the problems of matching arrays, but he understood it more clearly after practice. We also practiced on two-digit number multiplication, fractions and divisions. He did well on those problems. It was a good start after the holiday. I reviewed the students homework about the converting between percents, decimals, fraction, division problems, and estimating numbers. After that, we went through the multiplication and division of decimal numbers. He did very well on divisions. I also left him some problems as homework.

Today we reviewed the student's class work. They are currently on chapter 6 and learning about integers, negative numbers, and opposites. He did very well identifying and comparing the numbers. We also went ahead in his book. We discussed absolute value, adding and multiplying integers. The student was able to make connections and explain the operations using integers. We worked on some challenge problems and he was able to apply his knowledge to complete them.

We covered implicit differentiation, logarithmic functions, and behaviors of growth/decay functions. Catherine has not received her previous test to review. She mentions she struggles doing "u-substitution" as it requires her to go back and forth between integration and taking a derivative; I assigned her extra drill problems to work on this weekend. I will focus on providing her extra drill problems to further strengthen her integration skills and confidence in the upcoming sessions.
