We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Tutoring review by Steven in Lansing, IL
The student had recently taken a test on the Integrating techniques chapter of his textbook, and we spent the majority of our tutoring session going over problems he had trouble with on the test. These problems included integrating inverse trigonometric functions, single substitution, integration by parts, as well as the methods to discover which method is necessary to solve the given integrals. We also took a look at a limit using L'Hopital's rule. The student seemed to do well overall, but in the testing environment he was unable to try a second substitution method when the first method he tried was unsuccessful. It is important to be able to work out a problem and see if it will result in a solution, or see if another method will be needed. I demonstrated the importance of looking at the result during steps after substitution to see if it is necessary to try another tactic, or to continue evaluating the integral. After reviewing the test, we worked out a word problem from one of his AP testing practice sheets. The student has two large AP test review sheets, and will be working on those problems throughout the week, as well as studying from his integrating test for a retake on Friday. The student's score on Friday's retake test will help to mark progress. The student did very well in this session. He seemed to have a much better grip on the use of the chain rule when evaluating integrals, which seemed to be his primary area of trouble our last session.

Today the student and I worked on her algebra II homework and her chemistry post lab/homework. For math we covered multiplying complex fractions and for chemistry we worked on the ideal gas laws. The student is doing very well and seems to understand the information.

The student and I covered another practice AP test and, after redoing the previous problems (which she got all but one correct), we began answering free response questions. She will answer those that require a calculator, and also begin a new practice test for us to go over next Thursday.

The student and I focused on functions again. This session dealt with even and odd functions. He quickly grasped the concepts of axis symmetry and origin symmetry. He frequently skipped steps many students do in assessing function symmetry. We discussed how becoming familiar with taking those steps will make his more efficient and consistent. This will also increase accuracy when taking test or whenever he encounters a more pressured situation. We also worked on how to understand vertex form functions f(x)=a(x-h)^n+k, how they are graphed and how a, h & k effect the graph's position and quality.

Student 1 worked on operations and long division. She is doing well with both completing the four operation problems with ease and no mistakes. She also completed all of the long division problems correctly. Student 2 worked on adding simple numbers. We are working on getting faster with our facts. She still struggled with numbers adding over ten. I left her with a packet of simple addition and subtraction as extra practice.
