I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate of NYU Drama and an avid learner. My goal in working with students is to cultivate a passion for the material, to contextualize the content, and to transfer that excitement into articulate conversations. For me, anything and everything is an opportunity to gain insight whether inside the classroom or out. I have always loved guiding people through material - whether in an art museum with my parents or in class with my friends. This passion for school is augmented by a deep understanding of learning techniques and study skills. So while I believe the key to a student understanding material is a deep engagement with it, I also have tools to help recall and organize information. I specialize in History, Psychology, English, Reading, and Writing. I have experience with a wide variety of age groups from 10 to 18.

I am a theater director and freelance artist. However, when I am not at the theater I can be found listening to podcasts, watching reality tv, playing video games, or reading. Travelling is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I just got finished solo backpacking around Europe this summer and have been to India, China, Australia, and Central America.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first sessions with students I try to get to know them. My main priority is figuring out where they are in their studies, seeing and trying to understand what they are interested in, and what their struggle is in the subject we are working on. I ask them to explain the material to me as best as they are able, in order to discover what they miss and how they organize, process, and communicate information. I also try to move beyond academics and get to know who they are as people - their hobbies, passions, and obsessions - not only to build a relationship but also to try and find ways of relating more difficult or remote material to things they love.
