I am a graduate Mechanical Engineering student at Rice University in Houston, TX. Subjects that I can enlighten with include all levels of Math through Calculus 3, all levels of Physics, lower Chemistry, and Computer Science.
There's no getting around it: I am a Nerd. I breathe, eat, and sleep anything and everything technological and engineering, but I also wish to stress the engineering part - I'm very practical. I am a big fan of the KISS principle, and am a big fan of efficiency, not just in technologies, but in our understanding and use of them. Over time, that has made me an efficient mentor, able to explain and expand understanding of questions without creating overreaching or false simplifications.
Over the years, I've held several mentoring roles - as a senior research student, a laboratory engineer in charge of actually training newcomers, and now as a senior design mentor - and while most of those I mentored are college freshmen and sophomores, the questions and curiosities I had met weren't always that much different from the ones I'd answer while visiting my old school teachers on career days. In science, there are no stupid questions, nor are there unqualified pupils. You don't have to have an interest in science to appreciate its achievements or to contribute to its progress, you simply need to be human - that is, to be curious.
I know that modern science can seem a wholly complicated and vast subject matter that seems insurmountable. While that reputation is not unwarranted, I can also assure students that most concepts don't require a doctorate degree to understand - it's a matter of understanding the underlying principles and reasons. Science is only as simple and as complicated as we want it to be in any given situation. With that, I sincerely hope to help any future contributors get a good start on their ambitions, no matter who that might be.
