The student has a test regarding patterns on Friday. She had a practice packet, and we did some of the problems in there. Tomorrow, I will take a new approach: instead of using her practice packet, I will give her problems online which are "scored." I will also try to get her to complete problems as part of a game.

The student is smart, and she understands what is being taught to her rather quickly. Her teacher provided me with the work that she needs to catch up on (pronoun agreement and poetry). Since the student was in school for most of the pronoun agreement, we just went over a few things and worked through some exercises. I gave her a packet with pronoun agreement information to use in class and at home. Since she missed the poetry unit, I gave her an introduction to the writing style, based on what her teacher provided. We talked about literary devices that are used in poetry and other writing areas. She knew all but a few, so I had her do a few worksheets that asked for examples of a few devices. From there, we talked about analyzing poetry, and because the student has never done this before, she was hesitant about what she thought. I explained to her that when analyzing for the first time there was no wrong answer because the author isn't here to inform us whether we are right or wrong. Together we analyzed and answered a few questions about two more poems. She is a quick study, and I think that with another week or two of practicing poetry analysis she will feel more confident. I left her with an assignment of analyzing a poem and answering a few questions from a poem provided from her teacher.

Tutoring review by Daniel in Bensenville, IL
We were able to review all the material that the student has been challenged with. It is mostly exponent and logarithm properties. He understood how the properties worked, but just needed some extra practice using them to solve problems. He completed his homework, and we worked through an extra review set of problems. Once I showed him how to solve a type of problem, he remembered it and could solve similar problems on his own afterwards. He said that reviewing it together was helpful and that he felt pretty good about that chapter.

We covered scientific notation and worked through some practice problems to prepare her for her take home quiz. She is still struggling with scientific notation, however clarity is becoming aware the more we work the introductory concepts I am confident she with get there. We also discussed some way to improve note taking and learning through the PowerPoint format. We are scheduled to meet on Thursday.
