Today we covered circumference and area of circles, as well as equations involving pi. The student had trouble understanding how exponents work, especially squared, and he had trouble determining which formulas to use. The student was eager to learn. I taught him how to work out exponents, as well as which formulas are necessary for which problems. We did 2/3 of his homework, the rest was his extra practice. He got a 92 on his previous math test.

I studied with the student for her upcoming math finals. We went through the first four chapters of her book and went through the chapter review sections at the end of the book. For the most part, the chapters were fairly easy and she didn't have any problems, although she had forgotten some terms and needed to go back to the chapter to find their definitions and uses. She has it down now.

We discussed more concepts encountered in the practice exam that the student took over the weekend, and went over the thermodynamics section of practice book.
The thermodynamics section is relatively self-contained, although it is not as intuitive or cohesive as the previous sections. I was happily surprised, though, that he seemed to pick up on the spare details very quickly and always took the time to sort any new information out with his own explanation.
He will take another practice exam before we meet again tomorrow.

Really good work by the student today. He figured out most of the material after 3 questions and was largely independent from that point on. The only problem was that he still had his moments where he would completely forget how to do some piece of very basic math and would need lots of prodding before he snapped back to reality and solved the rest of the problem. This is something I will watch for, and possibly speak to his parents about. Other than that, he did wonderfully today!

We worked mostly on the student's AP Chemistry today. She had had some trouble on some stoichiometry problems in a recent assignment. Her biggest areas of concern were limiting reactants and percent yields. I showed her a technique for how to identify the limiting reactant and how to double-check one's answer. We also discussed how to calculate the number of moles of solute in a solution and how mole equivalence can be used to perform gravimetric analysis.
