OAT Tutoring FAQ
The Optometry Admission Test (OAT) is an important part of the application process to attend optometry school. This test is designed specifically to provide optometry education programs with a means to assess any applicant's potential for success. If you are struggling to prepare for the exam, Varsity Tutors can help you find an experienced OAT tutor who can help you.
The OAT is administered on a computer and is comprised of four sections lasting a total of five hours and five minutes, including an optional tutorial and break. The first section, Survey of the Natural Sciences, consists of 100 multiple-choice questions about biology (40%), general chemistry (30%), and organic chemistry (30%). An experienced tutor can show you how to use this section against itself by eliminating incorrect responses even if you're not sure what the correct one is, improving the likelihood that any educated guesses are correct.
The second section is Reading Comprehension and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions about three scientific reading passages. No prior knowledge of the material covered by the reading passages is required. However, you need to demonstrate an ability to comprehend and analyze basic scientific information. If you struggle to digest what you read, your OAT tutor can show you active reading techniques to help you take relevant notes as you go along. Not only does this make the questions easier to answer but it also allows you to save time by knowing exactly where to look for a piece of information.
The third section is Physics and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions on topics such as linear kinematics, D.C. circuits, thermodynamics, energy and momentum, and waves. If you understand the laws of thermodynamics but struggle with linear kinematics, your OAT tutor can concentrate on the latter to improve the efficiency of your study time. Any questions you ask may also be answered in a timely manner, helping you work at your own pace.
The fourth section is called Quantitative Reasoning and consists of 40 multiple-choice math questions concerning topics such as algebra, data analysis, probability, and statistics. If the idea of numbers on a standardized test concerns you, your tutor can provide practice exams to help you ascertain exactly what is expected of you on this section. A basic calculator is also available for this section.
If you're ready to start working with an OAT tutor, we can help you find one who meets your academic needs. We also offer a Live Learning Platform that allows for face-to-face study sessions on your device of choice, making the entire process as convenient as possible. Contact us today for more information.

Recent OAT Tutoring Session Notes
This session was an overview of remaining major concepts. The student is getting a bit nervous and hence did not do all of her homework (a bit of test fright). We talked about general strategies to keep up confidence. Following that, we worked on general classes of problems from probabilities. Likewise, we worked on functions and sequences. The pertinent problems were assigned, as well as some ancillary problems concerning number properties and coordinate geometry.
The student and I continued our exam tutoring. In this session we mainly focused on arithmetic. This included how to solve absolute values and inequalities. We also practiced functions, formulas, and sequences. Once again the student was very quick to pick up the concepts and apply them to difficult questions. If she is able to retain all of this knowledge she will perform very well on the test.
Like the last session, we did one hour of quantitative and one hour of verbal. Again, the student is definitely improving with the recall of his math fundamentals. He follows all of the methods to answer the questions, we just have to work on his ability to pick out the right mathematical tools for a given problem. That is an easy thing to pick up, and I see him garnering a TON of help from these sessions. On the verbal side, he continues to show exceptional ability. I have no concerns with how well he can do once we refine his techniques a little bit.
The pupil and I covered introductory information on GRE test-taking, and his goals for the test. We then went over questions from his practice test and discussed strategies for sentence-equivalence question types. His assignment for Thursday is to practice what we went over and to go through the 100 top math concepts and highlight the ones he is unfamiliar with.
We covered magnetism and practice problems for the assessment. We had a talk and decided to switch to Organic Chemistry for the time being, so that it aligns with the other work he's doing for his organic chemistry class.
We reviewed test material for the student's optometry admissions exam. The subjects in which we reviewed included physics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics. The student had a good understanding of the material going into the session which was shown in her high performance on the problems we went over.
