...as a tutor is not to teach someone how to solve a problem or pass a test, but to teach the essential knowledge needed to succeed in a course beyond the raw grade. I believe that through a holistic assessment of a subject, it will be easier for someone to learn how to accomplish tasks related to that subject in the future. I hope to get students to a point where they are self-sustaining.

Recent Calgary IB Global Politics HL Tutoring Session Notes
Today, the student and I began with a review of To Kill a Mockingbird. She has a test on the book this week and had review questions to complete. We finished several chapters worth, but did not get through all of them as she had history material that she wanted to cover. She really enjoyed the book and anticipates that she we will do well on the final test. We then moved on to history, competing notes on the beginning of World War I. We talked about the Schlieffen Plan, new technologies, and the two fronts of the war. The student is already familiar with much of this material, having covered it last year from the American perspective.
The student completed two more sets of ACT vocab words and we reviewed them together. She continued work on her end-of-course essay for Social Studies. We discussed the law case further and introduced new vocabulary words for Social Studies (muckraker, imperialism, trust/monopoly). We compiled study materials for her end-of-course exam as well. Our next session may be our last session for Social Studies, including the multiple choice and short answer exam.
The student continued a unit on Ancient Rome. Today she read and listened, and then took a quiz. She got 100%! Then she began and completed 3 postcards from Rome (Sistine Chapel; St. Peters' Basilica; and the Vatican Museum). Lastly, she began a brochure on a tour of Rome. She chose the five places to write about and completed the cover design.
We continued to focus on studying for the test. He had a test on ancient Greece coming up so we studied for that as well. We worked on the math sheets, specifically addition with carrying. He definitely understands the concepts.
Reviewed class handouts/review sheets and homework. Reviewed folder and reading log and responses. Guided student with responses to independent reading log. Vocabulary/dictionary work.
Today, we worked on the student's Thomas Jefferson project. For today, we needed to organize information that she needed to put on a timeline about Jefferson's life. To do that, we went through websites and made a list of 12 different dates and events in his life. I also helped her cite these websites in MLA format. We could not create the actual timeline since she was to do this at school. After this, I quizzed her on spelling words for a test she has on Friday. They were words with the endings -ful or -fully. She did well in this session and we were very productive.
