Ottawa CogAT Tutoring FAQ
The Cognitive Abilities Test, or CogAT, is an aptitude test used widely throughout the U.S. to determine a child's eligibility to enter gifted and talented programs. First used in 1968, this multiple-choice test is made up of three sections: the verbal battery, the quantitative battery, and the nonverbal battery. Depending on the school, these batteries may be administered to students all at once or separately. The focus of the exam is specific reasoning skills that have been shown to strongly correlate to academic success. Specifically, the CogAT measures the ability to learn new tasks, problem-solving abilities, and cognitive development. One strength of the CogAT exam is that it is largely nonverbal, so it can be useful for assessing students whose first language isn't English.
The CogAT is offered to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. If your child is preparing for the CogAT, it may be of great benefit to have him or her work with an experienced tutor who knows the ins and outs of the exam. Varsity Tutors can connect you with just the right tutor for your child.
Although it varies from school to school, the CogAT generally allows students 30 to 45 minutes per battery. The total exam consists of 118 to 176 questions, depending on the level. Within the verbal battery, your child will be asked questions on sentence completion, picture or verbal (depending on grade level) analogies, and picture or verbal classification. The quantitative section tests your child on number puzzles, number analogies, and number series. Finally, the nonverbal section tests your child on figure classification, figure matrices, and paper folding.
A private tutor can help your child prepare for the CogAT exam by working through similar questions and shoring up his or her strengths. At the same time, the tutor can help define your child's challenging areas, and focus on improving them. When you have a gifted child, you know that it's important to be able to provide the resources necessary to develop his or her natural abilities, and passing the CogAT with a high score is a great way to secure future gifted learning opportunities.
Your child's CogAT tutor can work at his or her own pace, without hurrying through skills that need a little extra work, while moving on when a concept is mastered. This provides for efficient study time focused specifically on your child's abilities. The one-on-one attention gives your child the opportunity to ask questions when they arise, and to get answers immediately. Sometimes children freeze up during an exam situation, so working with a tutor to gain confidence using materials that resemble the CogAT can be a great advantage.
Varsity Tutors will help you find a tutor who can work with your child based on your schedule. Using the Varsity Tutors live learning platform, your child even has the option of meeting with his or her tutor online. If your daughter or son is preparing for the CogAT, get in touch with Varsity Tutors today.

Recent Ottawa CogAT Tutoring Session Notes
We used a study book of questions and went through the equation building, number series, and quantitative relations. She did well on most and I only had to walk her through a couple of questions that she couldn't figure out. Next session we will review the paper folding and shape series questions.
I tested the student on the various sections of the placement exam to figure out his strengths and weaknesses. I was able to conclude that his weakest section is the verbal battery, specifically the verbal analogies subsection. I will come up with extra practice questions for our next session so that he can have additional work between our sessions. I am not concerned at all. He is very bright and learns very quickly.
The student and I covered practice items in his workbook to expose him to the different types of questions on the test. We also did some specific work with numerical sequences and equation building. The student was focused and eager to learn and no concerns were noted.
The student and I worked on a few story problems, and then selected a book about dogs from the library to practice her reading skills. She seems to prefer those things to math analogies. I will work on incorporating more math into future sessions to help her become more comfortable with it.
The student and I completed practice questions to prepare for the exam. Specifically, we worked on vocabulary and analogies. I worked with her on test-taking skills (eliminating answer choices, using clue words, looking for parts of speech, suffix/prefix, etc.). She is very bright and eager to learn. She is a joy to work with!
All the concepts that we have worked on in the previous sessions so far, I tried to review all of them. The student is taking the test tomorrow, so I tried to cover all the basic concepts that cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry and probability. Also reviewed some test-taking strategies like the elimination process and using substitution to find the answer.
