I'm a graduate of Hamline University, where I acquired a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. I also did graduate work at Hamline in Language Arts education. I was a student of music for many years, and have a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Colorado, Boulder where I studied voice. Having been a serious student of music in the past, I of course enjoy classical music; my favorites these days are the Baroque masters.I have been teaching English courses online for several years now, and it's been an excellent job for me as a parent since the hours are so flexible. Now that my child is grown, I'm interested in spreading my wings a bit and meeting students face to face as a tutor.My favorite subjects to teach are English Composition, Rhetoric, and research essays. I also am a grammar nerd and love to help students build their skills in this area.I love animals of all kinds and have a dog and a cat, who don't really get along with each other! I spend too much time breaking up their little spats, I think. But I wouldn't give them up, mostly because they're so entertaining.I also enjoy baking and cooking ethnic foods, and since I live near the Mississippi River I take advantage of our running paths on a regular basis. I love to be outside in the fresh air.

I received a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Philosophy from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in May 2015. I then stayed on for a Master of Arts in Philosophy, which I received in August 2016. University programs in English and Philosophy are designed to promote creativity, adaptability, and technical proficiency in reading and writing, with a special emphasis in Philosophy on clarity. These are values I have internalized, and I believe my work reflects that: for instance, in 2014, my GRE Verbal Reasoning scores placed me in the top 1% of test-takers.I moved to Brooklyn at the beginning of February. I have really enjoyed getting acquainted with the Greater New York area, and I've been lucky to attend some excellent live music shows. In the rest of my free time I enjoy reading (both literature and philosophy), making music on my synthesizer, and spending time in conversation with my friends.I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your student. I'm currently an instructor and MFA candidate at The Ohio State University. I hold an MA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Toronto and a BA from The University of King's College. I'm also an author: my essays and journalism have appeared in numerous magazines and literary journals, and my second book of poetry is forthcoming from a Penguin Random House imprint next year.I'm passionate about reading, writing, an analyzing the written word. I especially love helping students find their voice and express themselves in academic essay writing.

I believe that the most successful way of learning takes place when people work together. The help that I have received in my academic career has allowed me to accomplish the most difficult of my goals. My experience working with students in a diverse array of subjects has prepared me to adapt to students' unique styles of learning and help them achieve their academic goals.

I am a graduate of the public history program at the University of South Carolina, where I received an M.A. I am pursuing a career in historic preservation, because buildings and structures crucial to maintaining the culture of local and national society are constantly threatened. Throughout my graduate and undergraduate education, I worked in a teaching capacity, teaching sections of United States and Latin American History courses. With high scores being so crucial to student acceptance to top college programs, I am passionate about sharing the tips and strategies that helped me succeed on standardized tests. I especially enjoy teaching the Math sections of exams, because the subject boils down to learning and memorizing strategies that can be broadly applied. My strategy for standardized test preparation comes down to preparing the student not only for the material itself, but also for the experience of taking the tests. Success on standardized tests is as much an emotional exercise as an intellectual one. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, card and board games, and watching NBA basketball.
