As an experienced tutor in foreign languages and other subjects such as English, Reading, and ESL, I am more than happy to continue tutoring through Varsity Tutors. My experience of having studied a foreign language for over ten years has made me understand what it takes to learn and truly comprehend a foreign language. Additionally, having come to the United States as a teenager and having had to learn the English language at that age, I came to understand the struggles faced when trying to learn another language and I would be more than happy to help overcome those obstacles along the way.

I am a tutor with a variety of interests who can help with multiple subjects. I have a bachelor of science in psychology with a minor in teaching English as a second language, and I am pursuing a master in general addictions counseling. I have a love of learning, so if you have a question I don't know the answer to, we can figure it out together. This hunger for learning makes me passionate about helping students learn and understand when they are struggling. I feel like, as a tutor, it is my responsibility to figure out the best way to teach students, since everyone has a different learning style. If teaching something one way isn't understood, then I will continue trying different approaches until one makes sense. I especially like tutoring math, even though it has not been a career I have pursued, but I like to use my strengths in other subjects, like writing, too. I look forward to helping many students learn and exceed their expectations.

I am captivated with the English language, photography, and hiking. So I had to go to SUNY New Paltz where I doubled-majored in English and Communication and Media. Since the English language only became more intriguing to me the more I learned, I earned a M.A. in English while I was tutoring freshmen college students and working as a student-teacher for the Communication and Media department. These experiences made me aware that I loved helping students develop strategies to succeed. As a result, I became a Teaching Assistant at a high school, for two years, guiding students through subject-based tests, state exams, college essays, job preparation and wilderness backpacking experiences. While I worked at the high school, I began working towards earning a Master of the Arts of Teaching degree (December ‘14). I currently work as a Teaching Assistant with middle school students in ELA and Science. We are presently preparing for the state exams with a focus on reading and writing effectively.By reflecting on my experiences, I can say I firmly believe that not all strategies work for every student and it is my job as an educator to help students develop their own bag of strategies that they can reach for in any circumstance. This is accomplished by modeling, remodeling, and teaching the student procedures to help them use those strategies correctly and effectively.

I was born in Shanghai, China and stayed in Shanghai through high school before I attended Carleton College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in Cross-Cultural Studies. I am a native Chinese Mandarin speaker. During my 4 years at Carleton College, I worked as a teaching assistant with the Chinese Language Department. I tutored students on a one-on-one basis to help them improve their spoken and written Chinese language abilities. My way of teaching is extremely flexible, catering to the student’s need. If you come visit my sessions, you will find very interactive dialogues accompanied by laughter and a relaxing environment, yet very learning conducive. I used various methods and media to assist learning such as tapes, and short videos, etc. What I find the students appreciate the most is the cultural and history background I am able to bring into the tutor sessions to make learning more fun and meaningful. In addition, I also have strong interest and deep knowledge in Mathematics, such as Algebra and Geometry. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, travelling and photography.
