Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Hillary in Georgetown, TX
We finished going through geometry, covering diagonals, sphere formulas, and problem solving with the formulas she has learned. We moved onto review of fractions, square roots, and statistics. All went well, but more review is likely needed across the board as a last minute brush up before her test. Some concepts that she had previously understood went less well during this initial review. Next time we will be reviewing the reading comprehension.

During this session, we went over a few questions the student encountered problems with on an SAT math 2 practice exam. We then looked at questions in my practice book. Overall, this session went well.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Carolyn in Georgetown, TX
Today I conducted a thorough needs analysis to see where the student's current skills lie. She is eager to learn and excited to learn new ways to read and write. She enjoys excelling in math, and I am looking forward to guiding her through her current objective, and that is to get the highest score possible on the Middle-Level exam. For homework, she is going to do the first two units in both of her vocabulary workbooks, complete math practice problems, and read the first two chapters in Lord of the Flies.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Sean in Georgetown, TX
The student and I continued to focus on the math and writing sections of the SAT for this session (which was the day before the May test). For the first 45 minutes, we reviewed the essay. We created an outline for a couple of prompts and discussed: how to structure the essay, how to write a solid introduction/conclusion, and how to provide detailed content. We also spent time reviewing grammar concepts and completing sentence correction problems. We spent the remaining hour focusing on math. We completed and reviewed a math section, continuing to focus on some of the question types that the student has the most difficulty with (functions, geometry, etc.).

ACT Math Tutoring review by Ted in Georgetown, TX
Today's class was very productive. The student has his exam this Saturday. The concepts we focused on were the strategies to answer the sentence fill in questions and the reading passage portions. The basic strategies for the sentence fill in were to focus on avoiding misleading answers. In addition, the strategies provide a speed process to work through the questions as quickly as possible. Next we followed with the reading strategy that will help him read as little as possible while improving his accuracy in the question portion. The important thing to note is that the strategies are easy to learn. However, mastering them is a different story. He needs to get in as much practice as possible. I left him with a great deal of practice. He seemed positive in regards to doing as much practice as possible.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Max in Georgetown, TX
Today, the student and I went over the math section. She did slightly better than usual and seems to be coming along with some skills. She had a good attitude as always. She usually gets things after I give her one hint, which indicates that she has it in her head. I think it's a confidence issue, which is the main thing I am trying to work on, in addition to filling in the gaps in her knowledge.
