I worked in the areas of Behavior Disorders and Special Education.I attended Morris Brown College where I attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. I attended Atlanta University where I attained a Master of Arts degree in Behavior Disorders and a Master of Arts degree in Leadership for Director of Special Education. My experience working with children includes supervising teachers, changing students behavior, working on social skills, study skills, social studies and teaching reading on the elementary and middle school levels. I am currently tutoring tenth grade students on study skills, organizational skills, critical thinking skills and social skills. The subjects that I tutor are social studies, reading, language arts, study skills, critical thinking skills and organizational skills. My favorite subjects to tutor are Critical Thinking Skills, Reading, Social Skills, Study Skills and Organizational skills. My philosophy as a teacher is to teach the students who are willing to learn, and to motivate the students who are not willing to learn, with the knowledge of how to have influence on the child's total self. Every child who enters a classroom should feel safe and comfortable. Every classroom should be full of nurturing and enrichment.I am a huge college and NFL football and basketball fan. I enjoy attending games on both levels. I enjoy playing golf, riding my bike, singing and reading.

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of California - Irvine pursuing a dual degree in Economics and Political Science. As the older sister to two wonderful brothers, I often found myself aiding them in their organization and coursework growing up. In high school I became a peer tutor and continued to help others succeed and comprehend the material that we were taught. I firmly believe that education is one of the most important aspects to life. Beyond simply getting a job, there is so much in the world to explore, and I plan to never stop learning and growing even after I receive my degree. Innate curiosity, even into just one subject can spark a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. And as cliche as it sounds, knowledge truly is power.

I am a graduate of Brown University, where I earned my B.A. in Literary Arts and Visual Arts, taking courses in a wide array of subjects ranging from contemporary American fiction to ancient Indian classics. My first teaching experience came in college when I had the privilege of creating and teaching a series of literature courses at a local community center. There are few experiences I find more enriching than facilitating a meaningful dialogue centered around great works of literature and art. While literature and art are my passion, I also tutor in variety of other subjects, including math, science, and test preparation. I currently work as a lead teacher in the after-school program at Archway Classical Academy in Phoenix.

As someone currently studying for the LSAT and preparing to go to graduate school, I can relate to the challenges of being a student. I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2010 with a B.A. in Psychology and Communication Studies. I am extremely passionate about academics and learning; the value of each was inculcated into me at a very young age. I tutor a variety of subjects largely because I have so many areas of interests and have been privileged enough to pursue knowledge in those areas. I even enjoy tucking away "useless facts"...in fact, those very tidbits got me past the Jeopardy! Online Test and into the Contestant Audition! If I've learned one thing throughout my academic career, it's that everyone learns differently. In my opinion, a great tutor knows how to meet a student where they are in their work and findthe specific and best way to help them achieve their goals. I have honed this skill over many years of tutoring many different types of students. Additionally, with me, a student will havethe benefit of working with someone who has been on their side of the table. I was tutored in Math both when I was younger and in college, and currently have a tutor for the LSAT. I actuallylove being tutored, as I get the personalized attention that I need, as well as little tips and tricks that aren't necessarily taught to the larger class. I believe that having this experience as thepupil allows me to be an even more effective tutor. So, why do I tutor? As I mentioned above, I love knowledge. I love sharing knowledge. But most of all, I love helping students learn to love what they're doing. Frequently, when a student reaches the point with a tutor where they begin noticing that they are making progress, they begin really believing in their ability to do the work independently and they are more likely to be excited about their academics! Also, I know from experience that a good tutor is capable of helping a student through a specific subject or class; but, a great tutor can transform the way a student operates in all of their academic work and prepare them to be an even better student across the board. I strive for the latter as a tutor. So that you can have a better idea of who I am, I will tell you a few non-academic things about myself. First and foremost, I have an undying love for Star Wars that began and has beennurtured since I was eight. I own approximately 200 Expanded Universe books and comics, and far too much memorabilia. I also play professional ultimate frisbee. I've been playing sincecollege and they just formed women's pro teams this year, and yes, you read correctly, pro ultimate frisbee. In other words, I get paid (peanuts) to chase plastic. Other things I enjoy arereading a great mystery, watching Netflix, playing Xbox, riding horses, playing with my massive dog, and staying in shape!

Learning is a two-way street, where we can gain only so much by ourselves. It is human nature to interact with one another, and gain from that experience something much more than what can be learned individually. It is for that reason that students need to interact with their learning, such as with a tutor, in order to better cement the content learned in school. I feel that I am qualified to guide students on that journey. I hold a master's in education from Grand Canyon University and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University. Experience in tutoring extends from being the Saturday school coordinator at my local high school, to working with at-risk students in a credit recovery setting at an online night school. Other than teaching and tutoring, I enjoy relaxing by spending time with my wife, playing video games, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers and Phoenix Suns.

My ultimate goal, is to enhance the ability of every student that I tutor to succeed and excel in school. The most important job I have, is to patiently aid the student in developing an understanding of the content areas that I tutor, so that I can allow each student the opportunity to learn and transfer that knowledge to other areas of their scholastic life. I embrace diversity and warmly welcome all walks, faiths, personalities, abilities and cultural backgrounds.

As a tutor, I not only ensure my students make the grade, I nurture their academic self-esteem and innate intellectual curiosity. I do this by focusing on what my students know before turning to what they do not know. I take the time to understand and mentor my student’s particular gifts, using their individual strengths to conquer their individual academic challenges and become confident, creative, lifetime learners. By encouraging questions and providing hands-on interactive lessons which consist of substantial modeling (“see one”), guided practice (“do one”), and checking for understanding (“teach one”), I ensure my students understand the “why” rather than merely memorize the “that.”I am “HQ” (Highly Qualified) certified to teach Social Studies for grades 7-12. I currently teach a sophomore level ethics class at St. Edwards University. I taught several classes at The University of Texas at Austin as a Doctoral Candidate, where I also earned my M.A. in Philosophy. At the University of Southern California, I earned my B.A. with Departmental Honors along with the Discovery Scholar’s award for excellence in independent research. I have been tutoring and teaching for eleven years, with a primary emphasis on developing my students’ writing and critical thinking skills. In Renaissance Man fashion, I pursue well-roundedness. I let my imagination run free by playing World of Warcraft, watching Star Trek, and reading fantasy novels like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. I support my physical health by practicing yoga, camping, and experimenting in the kitchen with healthy, delicious, recipes. I soothe my soul by spending time with my family and friends, singing in my church’s choir and curling up with my husband and four cats to enjoy a relaxing evening at home.
