I want to help foster a greater awareness to the need for better education in this country. Our youth are the background of our society and it is our responsibility to make sure they're able to handle everything that will be coming their way in the future.I am a graduate of Florida International University and studied there for 5 years before receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. I am currently working at a Physical Therapy clinic called Downtown SportFit Rehab & Training. I am also applying for the Doctorate of Physical Therapy at a few universities in Florida. My goal is to become a Physical Therapists who works with the sports community and those who suffer athletic injuries, to return them back to their original form and better.I have become a Tutor to help kids, who are having difficulties in their academic journeys, overcome those issues, and show them ways to cope with any problems they may encounter down the road. I have worked with family members and with a classroom at a local elementary school. During my undergraduate education, I was able to participate in a program to benefit children with disabilities and was given some exposure to helping those children. My favorite subjects to tutor are Reading and Math. I feel like these two subjects are the most important subjects for students to master for their futures. I would say that my method in tutoring these subjects is to first gauge what issues my students are having with the material, isolate and rectify the issue from the root, and try to provide examples of what to do when the issue happens again. In my spare time, I love to play video games and enjoy spending time with family and friends. I am also a sports fan; basketball and football are my favorites.

I am a certified and experienced former middle-school teacher, with a particular passion for teaching reading and writing. I've also enjoyed teaching ESL and sharing my enthusiasm for learning Spanish. These experiences have included working with children from kindergarten through 12th grade.I am an alumna of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Pennsylvania, and a fluent Spanish speaker. In addition to working in 20+ American schools and programs, I have lived and worked in Chile and Peru, where I taught English and trained other teachers.I am a lifelong bookworm, proud owner of a "Grammar Police" T-shirt, and geek for fantasy and magical realism. I have a track record of helping students to discover or develop a love of Reading, Writing and Language. My most rewarding experiences have involved guiding struggling or unengaged students in finding their own talents as writers and learners. I believe a successful tutoring approach includes creativity, responsiveness, attention to detail, and a clear passion for the subject.

I am currently a sophomore at Columbia University in the City of New York. I am pursuing a degree in Earth and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Sustainability and Energy, and I am minoring in East Asian Studies (specifically, Japanese). After graduation, I plan on working in the renewable energy sector in either the United States or Japan. From September 2014 through July 2015, I worked as a tutoring specialist for a company. I tutored students ranging in age from 13 to 50, in various subjects such as calculus and chemistry. While I enjoy tutoring students in all of the subjects I specialize in, I love tutoring students in physics (specifically, mechanics and waves). Physics is my favorite subject to tutor because while it is more difficult to demonstrate phenomena from other subjects such as organic chemistry, physics is a very prevalent science, so even by rolling my pencil off of a table, I can easily demonstrate physics concepts to my students. For me, hearing "Oh, that makes so much more sense now!" from the students whom I tutor makes my job very rewarding because working with them to find the approach that best caters to their needs feels awesome. As a tutor, I always ensure that my students have a good qualitative understanding of the subjects they are struggling in before helping them with quantitative problems. For example, rather than simply telling my calculus students the formula for integration by parts, I first show them how it is derived so they acquire a good grasp of how it operates.Outside of school, I really enjoy being involved with music. I love singing, playing the drums, piano, and guitar. My favorite genre of music is rock, so playing rock songs with a band has always been one of my favorite things to do.

I graduated from Emory University in May 2015 with my BA in History and French. I am continuing my education at Columbia University's School of Social Work to receive my Masters in Social Work.I have had experience tutoring high school French, elementary/middle school math, science, social studies, and English/reading. My tutoring philosophy is based around the concept of being patient. It may take a student a while to understand a concept, but the moment when he or she does, it is extremely rewarding for the tutor, the parents, and the student. I like to instill confidence in my students as well as help them understand the academic lesson at hand. The best experience of my life was when I studied abroad in Paris during my junior year of college. I loved traveling around Europe, visiting museums, gardens, and historical sites, meeting the people and learning about their culture, and of course, trying the food. I learned about being independent and confident. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, traveling, and exercising.I look forward to working with you!

I'm a graduate of UW-Madison in the Elementary Education and Psychology departments. I'm currently teaching at a Milwaukee area elementary school with 60 wonderful 4th and 5th graders. With so many students in my classroom, I have a lot of experience working with many different types of learners. Even though I am certified in and enjoy teaching all elementary subjects, I enjoy teaching math and science the most! I recently asked my students what they enjoyed most about our class, and the resounding answer was that they love that we have fun while learning! In my free time, I love to play soccer, watch the Badgers and the Brewers, reading, and traveling. I look forward to meeting and working with you!

I am a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Arizona. I have my BA in European History from UCSC and my MA in Modern European History from U of A, and am currently pursuing my PhD in Modern European History at the University of Arizona. After completing my BA, I joined Teach For America and taught 7th grade Social Studies for two years, earning my Initial Educator's Certificate in the process. Teach For America, professional development through my school, and the Columbia Teachers College Reading & Writing Project all gave me valuable skills for teaching students of all different abilities and readiness to learn. These organizations also taught me how to motivate students and keep them invested in learning. After deciding to return to school, I began working as an instructor at Sylvan Learning Center, which gave me experience teaching students of all ages in a wide range of subjects. In addition to working at Sylvan, I also have experience as a TA and course leader for students at the University of Arizona taking classes in history. I have taught and tutored K-8 math, reading at all levels (from phonics development to critical anaylsis of texts), study skills, SAT preparation, social studies, and history at the high school and undergraduate level. While each subject is rewarding in its own way, as you may have guessed from this statement, I love history. Getting students to realize the joys of history and to see it as the fantastic unfolding of human events that it is represents one of my favorite experiences as a teacher. As a teacher, I've learned that every student can learn given the right circumstances. As a tutor and teacher, it's my job to work with the student to figure out how they learn so that I know how to teach them. Education is never a one-size-fits-all endeavor! When I'm not teaching or working towards my degree, I enjoy spending time with my family, from talking about silly TV shows with my sister to playing video games with my nephews. Whether it's the latest pop-country single or a Tom Waits deep-cut, I also love talking about, listening to, and playing music.

I've also had Orton-Gillingham training (an intensive multi-sensory reading approach targeting dyslexia and other language/reading issues). I have experience teaching children in all subject areas, but my specialty is literacy.Ive been recognized as an exemplary teacher and have received several teaching awards both in my role as school teacher and college instructor and was often requested for student placements. Ive developed lasting relationships with families of former students and have celebrated their achievements such as the recent graduation from Harvard Law School and the marriage of some of my former students this past year!My experience as a college instructor also enhances my ability to work with teens and adult learners. Ive taught classes on learning strategies and academic success techniques, early childhood education courses, reading and math methods, to name a few. Ive successfully helped students with their writing in a variety of topic areas. I edit and provide feedback on papers on a daily basis and do so with a positive and nurturing touch. Many of the adult learners in my classes have struggled with learning in the past and I offer support without judgmentI believe in focusing on a students strengths while building their weaker areas. Its my mission to help every learner make progress and fulfill his/her own potential by customizing each experience to suit individual needs.

Having retired after 30 years as a teacher, I find that I miss my students: teaching them, learning from them, and helping them on their academic journey. I view education as a journey, not a destination such as a test to study for or a paper to prepare. Education is an adventure full of exciting viewpoints, new twists, and solvable 'problems.'In my personal journey, every year I encountered 100 to 105 new viewpoints on every subject imaginable. We didn't just learn English; we explored the world. Our journey in the classroom wasn't limited to papers, grammar, and vocabulary though they were important components. We explored history through our novel readings, debated and wrote essays using primary sources from the Library of Congress, and changed a governor's viewpoint on the environment with a book my students wrote together. Though it never got 'published' in the sense of selling it at a book store, it changed viewpoints and gave students new ideas on the power of writing.Every year brought new twists to my adventure as a teacher and my students' adventure in learning. In reading Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, we explored child labor from the middle 1800's to the early 1900's. Using primary sources from the Library of Congress, we found children in England working in coal mines and textile mills, children in America toiling in canneries, coal mines, textile mills, and southern fisheries. We examined pictures from The New York Times to figure out what was happening by looking at the details and sharing our thoughts. Students wrote poetry based on their lives, their perspective, and their hopes. We learned empathy and compassion for others by examining the viewpoints of Scout, Jem, and Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. We didn't just read and study the book; we immersed ourselves in their shoes.Every year, the students and I encountered countless problems: academic, personal, and social. We learned to problem solve and think positively. We learned there are many ways to approach a 'problem' and even more ways to solve it. We learned from each other.Students have enriched my life. My lifelong journey has been hand in hand with boys and girls from all walks of life, numerous cultural backgrounds, and unique perspectives. I have been their 'student' learning from them, arguing with them, and loving them. Students are our country's lifeblood. Whatever I can do to enhance their journey is a blessing. Please join me in my new adventure with Varsity Tutors! I look forward to what I will learn on my continuing journey.

I believe learning can (and should) be fun. When students enjoy learning, they will be more dedicated and learn more effectively. With that said, a teacher's job is to find the best way to make learning enjoyable while still presenting a challenge for the student.I really enjoy working one-on-one with students. I get to know them on a deeper level, which helps build rapport and makes learning more enjoyable. It also allows me to devote more individualized attention to that student, assessing their needs and ensuring progress.I am an experienced tutor, and I've helped a lot of students succeed in their academics. I have a degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Vermont, and I'm also a certified ESL teacher. Just recently I returned from China, where I was working as both the head of the English department and as a private tutor. I'm also currently working with elementary students who qualify for supplementary education services through the government.
