I am a Computer Science-Statistics and Psychology double major at Columbia University. I have been a tutor for three years, specializing in college-bound high school students and middle school children. While I have experience tutoring many subjects, my favorites are Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. I did not discover my passion for these subjects until college (I was admitted to Columbia as pre-law for my writing), and I wish I had been exposed to the fun aspects of these subjects at younger age. Often we are discouraged from science and math while young by phrases like "I'm just not a math person," when the reality is that everybody learns math differently. These subjects are my favorite to tutor because it is incredibly rewarding to facilitate a previously-struggling student's confidence and understanding.

I have been teaching 7th and 8th-grade math for 15 years. I have also been tutoring math students from 6th grade to 10th grade in math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry. I like to let the student drive the tutoring session. If you just want someone to validate your answers, teach you a different way, or just sit and work the problems together, I'm your person! I like to talk about sports and rollercoasters. I don't want to be just your tutor--I want to be your math advocate as you progress through your math classes.

Algebra Tutor • +53 Subjects

I am a dedicated teacher because I am a dedicated learner and I strive to instill in my students that same passion for knowledge and mental exercise, all while improving the student's grades. My tutoring experience stretches back to when I was a high school student tutoring students younger than me in various math and science classes including SAT prep, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. Now, as a graduate of Boston College with a degree in mathematics and economics who has completed the premedical prerequisite courses, I hope to continue my journey as a tutor.I employ a teaching strategy of explaining important concepts, practicing problems, and reviewing mistakes. My method is to begin by finding the student's weaknesses and explaining those difficult concepts to the students. I then guide the student through practice problems and finally discuss with the student his or her mistakes and show the student how to avoid those mistakes in the future. My teaching strategy relies heavily on practice because I believe through practice, the student can fully synthesize the concepts learned in class and in the tutoring session. Guided practice also allows the student to work through problems and receive help getting past parts of problems that give them difficulty. Through this method, the student will feel more comfortable working through homework problems and answering difficult test questions.I believe that learning is about understanding important concepts, not memorizing a bunch of formulas, and that obtaining the right answer is less important than trying to understand a problem and devising a method to solve it. The ability to think critically is applicable to all facets of a student's life and academic career. I, as a tutor, hope to help the student hone that ability and apply it towards a successful academic career.I am available any day of the week and can meet at the student's home, at the library, a coffee shop, or at a park. I'm flexible and hope to make learning fun for the student. I assign optional homework assignments to provide extra practice. I go over the homework assignments if the student chooses to do them. I also offer written progress reports for parents upon request.Contact me to set up a tutoring session!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Huntington's 23 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in the Cabell County Schools district or nearby areas, we match them with tutors who understand the local curriculum and West Virginia academic standards.

Huntington students frequently seek support in math, English, and science—subjects that build foundational skills for standardized testing and college readiness. We also help students prepare for West Virginia End-of-Year assessments and provide targeted support in algebra, chemistry, and writing, which are critical areas for academic success in the region.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 12.8:1 in Huntington schools, personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills an important gap by giving your student dedicated attention tailored to their specific learning needs. A tutor can work at your student's pace, address individual gaps, and provide the focused feedback that larger classroom settings can't always offer.

During the first session, a tutor will assess your student's current understanding, learning style, and specific goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a particular subject. This foundation helps the tutor create a personalized plan that aligns with your student's needs and Huntington's curriculum standards.

Tutors are familiar with West Virginia's content standards and assessment expectations, so they can target instruction toward the skills and knowledge your student needs to succeed. Whether your student is working toward proficiency on state assessments or building skills for college and career readiness, personalized tutoring helps bridge gaps and reinforce key concepts aligned to state benchmarks.

Varsity Tutors works with families to find tutoring solutions that fit different budgets and schedules. Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions, and we're happy to discuss options that work for your family's needs.

Simply tell us about your student's needs, grade level, and goals, and we'll match them with a qualified tutor in the Huntington area. You can start with a single session to see if it's a good fit, and adjust the tutoring plan based on progress and your student's evolving needs.

Yes, we connect students with tutors across a wide range of subjects, from core academics like algebra and biology to AP courses, test prep, and specialized subjects. Whether your student needs help with honors-level coursework or is preparing for college entrance exams, we can find a tutor with the right expertise.
