I'm a current medical student located in Chicago studying for my board exams. I was home-schooled during middle and high school and from this experience I learnt the importance of self motivation as well the need to have someone that will give you the extra push when you need it. The flexibility of homeschooling gave me the opportunity to participate in the dual enrollment program at my local community college in Gastonia, NC. It was during this time, my first experience in a public school setting, that I realized my love for tutoring. During a college math course I was asked by a fellow student to explain the concepts we were going over in class. She later told me about failing 3 consecutive exams and was on the verge of quitting. After our third session together she began to see improvements in her homework grades and was able to score an 88% on her math exams. To me the greatest highlight of my time at that institution was when we "high-fived" after she got her test score.I transferred to Queens University after high school graduation; there I was offered a position as a physics and organic chemistry tutor my junior and senior year. I've always taken pride in helping students, and hold to the belief that anything worth doing is worth doing well; even when the job is tutoring. One Saturday I was stuck in the library for 8 hours with a tutee going over concepts in physics. Of course after our long session we both swore never to look at physics again, but the following Monday there I was at the Center for Academic Success with another student.Throughout my educational endeavor I've being privileged to help students both in my class and the classes behind me. At Queens University I received the tutor of the year award, as well as an award for a research project I presented both at the school and at a national science conference in West Virginia. Growing up, kids like to pretend they're going to be doctors or professional athletes or astronauts. I wanted to be a teacher. I'm not even kidding - I had my own classroom in my garage where the neighborhood students came. This started in third grade and continued into middle school. I would find out what they knew, teach them a lesson, and then assign them homework. I would tell (tattle) their parents if they didn't do the work. My first parent/ teacher conferences were held at my neighbor's house in their living room. I assessed my friend Doug's progress in math, which was dreadful from what I remember, and gave pointers on how he could use flashcards to increase his fluency. And yes, I used the word fluency. I feel that my teaching philosophy can best be explained with an adage that I was introduced to in another position: Keep the student at the center of every decision you make. This guides my planning and instruction every single day. I remember that students are the reason I am here, and the "easy" approach for me may not be what is best for them. My aim is to make sure that my students understand the material, which requires me to assess mastery in a variety of manners. There is no one way to teach or assess a student, so, as a teacher, I cannot give up. I enjoy being innovative and spending my free time researching new technologies or approaches to a subject. It is my goal to always be a student of my field so I do not forget a student's mentality. Students should be able to also apply information from my class to their outside lives. It is my hope that they feel empowered after gaining skills in my course so that they can better their lives, as well as the world. My students do not just learn how to write; they learn how powerful writing can influence those in control. They see the power in words and want to use them rather than have to use them. Discussions take on a life of their own as I carefully poke at their logic to make them use their critical thinking skills. We do not just turn in a paper and move on - we use those same skills, but apply them in different ways all throughout the course. Language is life, and we need to learn control over it to succeed.

I have worked with several school districts for 15 years, including HISD, LCISD and Alief ISD. I am registered with the state of Texas through the Texas Education Agency and have my Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology. I also have experience working with children under the Special Education. I will do whatever it takes to make sure the students understand every detail of the curriculum. I make sure the students can provide an example or show they understand by verbally explaining, using pictures, writing or physically acting it out. I plan to do this by making sure the students are engaged in learning by making it fun and being creative. Education is very important and a life line that can make a difference in every child's life.

I am a US Army Veteran with 20 years of experience as a helicopter and maintenance test pilot. My passions are technology and psychology. After retirement from Service, and a brief employment period as logistics manager at a local hospital, I discovered my passion for teaching. Based on my background in technology, I chose Mathematics as the subject of choice, and have taught Algebra1and 2, Geometry, and Math Models primarily at an Alternative Education Center in Central Texas. The program we use at our school is Edgenuity. This environment has provided me with everything I am passionate about: students who need my help, the psychology to meet students' needs of all backgrounds, and the technology of various Blended Learning applications. I speak German, English and some French, and have a PhD in Forensic Psychology (Walden University, 2020). I am looking forward to working with all learners, whatever your need is: Math, Technology, Psychology, or German.
