I have my Ed.D. (Education Doctorate) in Educational Administration with specializations in Director of Special Education and Adult; Higher Education from the University of South Dakota, and my Master of Science in Special Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM). I am a Master Trainer with Action Based Learning (ABL). I am also a Time to Teach Center for Teacher Effectiveness Trainer. I have been a special education (SPED) teacher at all grade levels PreK-12, a SPED Assessment Coordinator, an Assistant Professor at MSUM in teacher preparation (K-12 and Special Education), and Coordinator of all SPED Programming, the Director of Special Education and Director of Student Support Services at KIPP Houston, the Training & Curriculum Specialist for the U.S Army Reserve Family and Youth Enrichment Programs, and Curriculum Specialist / Assistant Director for Creative Learning Center an alternative school specializing in programming for PreK-12 students with a variety of needs not able to be addressed in a public school setting.During my doctoral study, I reviewed and implemented research-based strategies measuring the effect of using movement-based instruction on academic learning as compared with seated learning opportunities. During my study in the field of SPED, I earned licensure in Emotional/Behavior Disorders (E/BD), Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), and Physical/Health Disabilities (P/HD). I was selected by the state of Minnesota to be a Teacher Mentor in the field of special education and have also spent eight years as a consultant for implementation of the Response to Intervention (RtI) model for Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas. Additionally, I am a trainer and certified coach for Teacher-Child Interactive Training (TCIT), which teaches teachers and children how to develop self-regulation and self-control skills.My experiences encompass over twenty years of working with a variety of families and youth (birth-lifespan) with exceptionalities and diverse needs in public and charter school settings, communities (before and after school programs), consulting, and professing at the university level. I have extensive experience in working with positively impacting academic achievement, pedagogy and methodology, assessment, curriculum and instruction development, teaching behavior, due process, instructional technology and assistive technology. I also presented numerous times both at national and international venues and am the author of two eBooks: one on social-emotional learning and mindset and the other on personal health and wellness.

I recently graduated with my M.A. in English from the University of South Dakota. While there, I had the opportunity to teach Composition (English 101) in the Fall. Additionally, I have taken a Practicum class during which I developed documents such as lesson plans and examined pedagogical theories. I believe this experience provided me with invaluable training the prepares me well for any teaching environment. In the Spring semester, I decided that I wanted to expand my understanding of teaching theories, and did this through an elective course in the Education Psychology department. This course examines ideas such the cognitive basis for teaching strategies. Through this course in particular, I've developed a passion for understanding the science of learning and exploring questions related to the field of teaching.In particular, I've found during my time as a graduate student that I enjoy working with student individually. Working as a peer tutor as an undergraduate, I was able to see how this individual attention can help a student discover his/her own voice and gain confidence. As a graduate teaching assistant, I found some of the most rewarding aspects of teaching were the moments when I would meet with a student during a conference and the student expressed excitement about a particular writing topic or when, during a conference, I was able to help a student who struggled with a particular concept.I also have several academic interests that help to enhance my teaching. I have a strong interest in creative work which I think informs how I approach teaching writing in the classroom. As a graduate student, I was a member of the Graduate Poetry Workshop which strengthened my ability to give effective feedback on others' writing. Additionally, during my time as a graduate student, I have worked on two different creative writing publications, The South Dakota Review (as a poetry reader) and Atrophil Press (as poetry editor). This experience has been helpful to me professionally in that I have gained skills in meeting deadlines and working as a team member. In addition, it sharpened my eye as an editor and helped me become a more effective writing critic.I have developed several critical interests, as well, and I believe the diversity of these interests strengthens my ability to present material in the classroom or work with students individually. For my M.A. oral defense, I presented two critical seminar papers to my committee, composed of three faculty members. One paper examines the poetry of two African-American poets, Saphire and Harriet Mullen, and the other examines the impact of Theodore Dreiser's novel Sister Carrie on American Literature. Through working with my committee members, I gained experience relating verbally my written ideas in a clear and insightful way. I believe I gained invaluable experience from the process of revising and presenting these two papers that translates well to classroom teaching and working with students to become independant thinkers in the humanities.The development of community within our profession is very important to me, and I have had several opportunities to engage in this type of service. For example, I attended the AWP conference last Spring with the South Dakota Review staff and helped with promoting the publication at the book fair. Often what we do as scholars or writers is a solitary endeavor, but this experience, in particular, opened my eyes to how transformational community is in what we do. I am also a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors organization, through which I have participated in activities such as planning campus activities such as poetry contests and volunteering with publicity events. These activities have shown me how central the idea of community is to any work environment which is an idea that I will bring with me to my future endeavors.

I have been tutoring students from Elementary all the way to High School, including ESL students, for 6 years now. I think that every student has potential that can sometimes be inhibited by grades and peer pressure. I strive to unleash the inner spark in every student I encounter. I feel that there is no such thing as a learning difficulty, rather there are teaching opportunities and different approaches to mastering a subject.

I have retired and now enjoy attending baseball games and helping a few select students. My career has primarily been comprised in three areas. The Marine Corps for twenty-one years where I taught and led, then I started and ran a Hunting lodge for a couple years and finally served as a police officer in a small town for seven years. From my earliest days as a student, I have been fascinated by the interplay between knowledge creation and its transformative impact on individuals and communities. This fascination guided me through my doctoral studies in Health Sciences, where I immersed myself in Telehealth, and continues to inspire my work as a professor. I am currently in my last year of my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Dakota. I am passionate for teaching and making a difference in students' lives, through learning about their personalities and tailoring content to help every one learn individually. I have worked in a daycare setting as well as an after-school program setting, tutoring and taking care of children aged younger than one year to 6th grade. I also have experience in many classrooms through internships and volunteering. I can tutor mostly Elementary age students in all Elementary subjects like reading, math, language arts, science, and social studies.

Metaphor of TeachingTeaching is like riding a bike. The roads upon which I ride my bike have many hills and valleys to deal with but they are never too tall or too deep to overcome. Students and I will have good and bad days, but no problem will be so great that we cannot overcome. The wind can be a friend by pushing me from behind to make the journey easy or it can be an enemy by pushing against me to hold me back. The distance is the same but the effort is much greater when there is a head wind. Students will receive an education, but for some it will not come as easily as it will for others. I, as a teacher, will try to make the education the student receives feel like a tailwind. My bike is a tool that enables me to cover great distances over the duration of the day. Sometimes my bike runs smoothly if the chain is well lubricated and the wheels spin true. Sometimes my bike is sluggish when the chain is dry or dirty and the wheels are out of round. The students and I will have to work with the resources we are given. I will make their education the best it can be with those resources. Many days the students will be riding uphill against a headwind and many days the students will be riding downhill with a tailwind. The students will realize that not all days will be difficult and not all days will be easy. The goal of my bike rides is never the destination but rather the journey itself. Perseverance to overcome the weather, the terrain and condition of the road, and the condition of my bike is what is gratifying. I, as a teacher, must persevere above the resources I have been given, the differences among the individuals, and my own capabilities to give the students the education they deserve. Students will understand that receiving an education is a journey that will never end.

As a licensed attorney with over 22 years of experience, I am passionate about demystifying the law for students of all ages. I hold a Doctorate in Law with a focus on Tax and Estate Planning from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and I have been tutoring for more than 5 years. My specialties include Contract Law, Bar Exam preparation, and various levels of English. I believe in tailoring my teaching approach to connect with each student, emphasizing the practical applications of legal concepts in everyday life.
