I am a graduate of UofL with a BS degree in Biochemistry and minor in Biology, heading to medical school at UVA this fall. I have spent 5 semesters as a teaching assistant for the Chemistry Department, spending three semesters teaching general chemistry and two semesters teaching organic chemistry. I have also spent a year as a small-group tutor, helping individual students through tough chemistry topics. While I have a strong background in biology, I am most passionate about tutoring chemistry I love its order, set in rules and mathematics. A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I matriculated at Centre College in Danville. There I studied history and played for the school soccer team. I left with many bruises and a degree in history.After a short diversion to serve my country in the Army, I moved to Louisville. I worked for the city and later the water company. I returned to school at the University of Louisville. I worked on a Master's degree in Teaching and certification in learning and behavior disorders.Once certified, I embarked on a career teaching. I have worked at three different high schools, teaching regular and resource classes, as well as coaching soccer. At the moment, I work as a special education teacher inside Our Lady of Peace hospital. There, I work daily to meet the educational needs of students with significant behavioral issues that temporarily prevent attendance at a regular school.I have worked as a tutor at various times throughout my teaching career. For several years, I worked evenings and Saturday mornings at a Sylvan Learning Center. Later, I tutored individual students through an organization called ClubZ!I tutor because it allows me to work one-on-one with a student. As a classroom teacher, I rarely get this opportunity. I am currently illustrating a Children's book.In 2016, I was the operations manager at a local arts education non-profit organization, the Squallis Puppeteers. We would instruct children and adults to create a puppet and tell their own story. We would also perform puppet shows throughout school gymnasiums and various locations. After getting more exposure in school classrooms, I decided to be more involved in education.In 2018, I began to substitute teaching in the Jefferson County Public School system. I started to pick up long term positions and was integrated into training to better my instructional skills.When the pandemic struck, I lost my position for some time and decided to wait no longer. As a graduate of San Diego State University with a BA in English and a graduate of CSU Long Beach with an MA in English Literature, I enjoy the idea of embracing a subject where no answers are correct or incorrect, just proven or disproven with evidence. My favorite response to students is, "What's your source?" and then having them find more sources to back up their answers becomes a fun exercise. I believe any student has the ability to learn any subject. The reason students tend to struggle is because the information has not be presented in a way that they can understand. As a tutor, my job is to recognize when the student is struggling. This allows me to adjust my teaching and ask different questions to gauge their understanding.I am also a huge advocate for active learning. Just reading or looking at the information is not enough to gain a grasp on the information. Through the use of recall, active work, and student-given explanations, I help the students become more confident in the work. They will feel more prepared for tests and every day class assignments.

I am currently a registered professional engineer (PE) in the state of Kentucky. My teaching experience dates back to 2015 when I began as a swim instructor for the YMCA. However, I first began tutoring academic lessons in 2018 at the University of Louisville. At UofL, I have tutored classes such as Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Hydraulics, Economics, and Statistics. From peer tutoring, I developed a tutoring philosophy known as scaffolding, which I use now as much as possible. Scaffolding is a tutoring style that builds from a common understanding that the student has, and it grows to an understanding of a new topic. Outside of academia, I love sports, especially basketball and football, swimming, and video games.

Currently, I'm a fourth year dental student and I'm motivated to tutor. I tutored for about four years in my undergraduate and this is where I learned different learning strategies. I altered and personalized the way I taught each student depending on how they learn best. I was able to communicate effectively and would enjoy every session I had with each student. My sense of humor follows the 80/20 rule: 80% of my jokes work about 20% of the time. When I teach a class, if I haven't made them laugh at least once then I've failed. I know what it's like to suffer as a math student. Math was my hardest subject in high school and even made me cry sometimes. When I got to Calculus, though, everything came together and I came to see the beauty in mathematics. I continued this cycle of suffering followed by joyful understanding when I studied math in college and then grad school, and now that I'm finally out of academia, I can relax and share my experience with others. When I engage in an hour of private tutoring I tend to go over-time by around fifteen minutes if I need to do so to wrap up whatever we were working on. Teaching is a passion, a calling, and a compulsion for me.
