During my time at the University of Louisville, I pursued a variety of different majors, in French, Philosophy, Math and Physics due to the diverse range of my passions, and finally settled on the Humanities because it allowed me to study all of them at once. I am most passionate about teaching anything within the Arts (e.g. Literature), French language and culture, and the purer side of Mathematics, where the abstractions of numbers give us the freedom to do with them what we will. I also love helping students work their way through the daunting task of preparing for standardized tests. I have often found that my past students have gotten tangled in the problems that have been set out for them, and I have always found success in teaching the conceptual framework behind these problems, so that they learn to find solutions by whatever means they prefer. As indicated by my degrees at the beginning, I am incredibly passionate about film and film studies I am a huge movie buff. But perhaps the most important thing I can say about myself is that I don't believe that any subject is out of reach for any student. Since a young age, I have always been passionate about sharing what I have learned with others. I have experience in teaching and tutoring in social work field education to Master's level students. The subjects range from social work ethics, LMSW test prep, case management, social justice policy and psychology 101. All subjects are my favorite to teach. In 2020, I graduated from the University of Louisville with my Master's of Science in Social Work with a Specialization in Military Social Work. In college, I showed an interest in these particular subjects, since I knew that I would be applying what I have learned in my future career as a social worker. While in college, I have learned that everyone has their own way of learning and processing knowledge. I work with all four different types of learning styles: visual, auditory, kinetic, and reading/writing. I make learning fun and interesting by giving examples of how to apply what is learned to real life. Cramming or rushing to learn a subject is not always wise. You will feel motivated to learn when you have someone who will work with you at your own pace, I am great at doing that! After graduating, I began working in the arts community of Louisville as an art educator. I am also a painter; I work by commission and have shown personal work in Louisville, Cincinnati, and Chicago. I am currently illustrating a Children's book.In 2016, I was the operations manager at a local arts education non-profit organization, the Squallis Puppeteers. We would instruct children and adults to create a puppet and tell their own story. We would also perform puppet shows throughout school gymnasiums and various locations. After getting more exposure in school classrooms, I decided to be more involved in education.In 2018, I began to substitute teaching in the Jefferson County Public School system. I started to pick up long term positions and was integrated into training to better my instructional skills.When the pandemic struck, I lost my position for some time and decided to wait no longer. I applied for the graduate program and gained more confidence in developing relationships, trust, and teaching skills.As an educator, I will help guide my students to self-discovery by cultivating their imagination and providing them with engaging experiences.

My area of interest is early modern Atlantic maritime culture, particularly political and socioeconomic culture, and my dissertation is a study of early 18th-century pirates and their expressions of political identity. While my research interests are varied, I am particularly interested in early modern political culture in the British Atlantic world.I also have experience teaching in the Humanities. I have taught courses as varied as American Culture and World Literature to Celtic & Norse Mythology. I very much believe in an interdisciplinary approach to understanding any subject and often employ a variety of methodologies in the classroom. I believe any student has the ability to learn any subject. The reason students tend to struggle is because the information has not be presented in a way that they can understand. As a tutor, my job is to recognize when the student is struggling. I left with many bruises and a degree in history.After a short diversion to serve my country in the Army, I moved to Louisville. I worked for the city and later the water company. I returned to school at the University of Louisville. I worked on a Master's degree in Teaching and certification in learning and behavior disorders.Once certified, I embarked on a career teaching. I have worked at three different high schools, teaching regular and resource classes, as well as coaching soccer. There, I work daily to meet the educational needs of students with significant behavioral issues that temporarily prevent attendance at a regular school.I have worked as a tutor at various times throughout my teaching career. For several years, I worked evenings and Saturday mornings at a Sylvan Learning Center. I believe that the most important part about the learning process is finding how it is relevant to the student. The best way to make it through something we are struggling with is to relate it to something that is relevant and interesting to the student. Meeting students where they are at with what they are truly interested in is something that I strive to do. This will look differently with each subject and with each person. I am an avid reader, and people often come to me for recommendations for themselves or their children. One of the most common complaints is that their child doesn't like to read. My response, and something I have found to be true multiple times over, is that they just haven't found the right book yet. It takes work, and it can be frustrating. But, when you find that just right book, or that learning method that clicks, learning moves from being a struggle to becoming an accomplishment. Sometimes I have lucked out in the past and making those important connections immediately. Other times I have felt like Wile E. Coyote, always trying the next idea even though the first thousand ideas didn't quite work out.

My sense of humor follows the 80/20 rule: 80% of my jokes work about 20% of the time. When I teach a class, if I haven't made them laugh at least once then I've failed. I know what it's like to suffer as a math student. Math was my hardest subject in high school and even made me cry sometimes. When I got to Calculus, though, everything came together and I came to see the beauty in mathematics. I continued this cycle of suffering followed by joyful understanding when I studied math in college and then grad school, and now that I'm finally out of academia, I can relax and share my experience with others. When I engage in an hour of private tutoring I tend to go over-time by around fifteen minutes if I need to do so to wrap up whatever we were working on. Teaching is a passion, a calling, and a compulsion for me.
