A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I matriculated at Centre College in Danville. There I studied history and played for the school soccer team. I left with many bruises and a degree in history. After a short diversion to serve my country in the Army, I moved to Louisville. I worked for the city and later the water company. I returned to school at the University of Louisville. I worked on a Master's degree in Teaching and certification in learning and behavior disorders.Once certified, I embarked on a career teaching. I have worked at three different high schools, teaching regular and resource classes, as well as coaching soccer. At the moment, I work as a special education teacher inside Our Lady of Peace hospital. There, I work daily to meet the educational needs of students with significant behavioral issues that temporarily prevent attendance at a regular school.I have worked as a tutor at various times throughout my teaching career. For several years, I worked evenings and Saturday mornings at a Sylvan Learning Center. Later, I tutored individual students through an organization called ClubZ!I tutor because it allows me to work one-on-one with a student. As a classroom teacher, I rarely get this opportunity. The opportunity for individual instruction gives me the chance to see real progress in the students I have the privilege to tutor.Outside of teaching, I enjoy coaching (and watching) soccer. I also like to ride my bike along the new trail through the Parklands of Floyds Fork.

After getting more exposure in school classrooms, I decided to be more involved in education. In 2018, I began to substitute teaching in the Jefferson County Public School system. I started to pick up long term positions and was integrated into training to better my instructional skills. When the pandemic struck, I lost my position for some time and decided to wait no longer. I applied for the graduate program and gained more confidence in developing relationships, trust, and teaching skills. As an educator, I will help guide my students to self-discovery by cultivating their imagination and providing them with engaging experiences.

As a graduate of San Diego State University with a BA in English and a graduate of CSU Long Beach with an MA in English Literature, I enjoy the idea of embracing a subject where no answers are correct or incorrect, just proven or disproven with evidence. I enjoy teaching students, and I enjoy what I learn from their perspectives. Learning can be engaging and fun when students are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas in an academic environment. My favorite response to students is, "What's your source?" and then having them find more sources to back up their answers becomes a fun exercise. I strongly believe in John Hatti's research that the key to student success relies upon both immediate feedback on the teacher's part and then reflection on the student's part.

I believe any student has the ability to learn any subject. The reason students tend to struggle is because the information has not be presented in a way that they can understand. As a tutor, my job is to recognize when the student is struggling. This allows me to adjust my teaching and ask different questions to gauge their understanding.I am also a huge advocate for active learning. Just reading or looking at the information is not enough to gain a grasp on the information. Through the use of recall, active work, and student-given explanations, I help the students become more confident in the work. They will feel more prepared for tests and every day class assignments.

I feel a teacher's or tutor's main goal is to remeiate the areas needed by the student. The secondary part that I focus on is helping the student learn to love learning. This I do by learning about my students and structuring the lessons to include their interests when possible. I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. I have a Masters in Education with concentration in Business Education and Learning and Behavior Disorders. Both of my degrees are from the University of Louisville. I taught business and classes for students with learning and behavior disorders including ADHD in Louisville, KY for seven years and substituted for five years. I taught middle and high school. I, also, taught the GED to high school and adult students. I was an adjunct instructor for two business colleges. I have tutored an eighth grade student in reading and math. A ninth grade student in all subjects including study skills. For the last 5 years, I have been teaching English as a Second Language online in China. I love tutoring everything but my favorites are reading, writing, and accounting. I enjoy volunteer work at my spiritual center and in animal rescue.

Eight years later, I still enjoy helping anyone with their math phobia and the struggles of mixing letters and numbers!I am still in the Air Force Reserves and my experiences have taught me not to stress the little things in life. My sense of humor follows the 80/20 rule: 80% of my jokes work about 20% of the time. When I teach a class, if I haven't made them laugh at least once then I've failed. I know what it's like to suffer as a math student. Math was my hardest subject in high school and even made me cry sometimes. When I got to Calculus, though, everything came together and I came to see the beauty in mathematics. I continued this cycle of suffering followed by joyful understanding when I studied math in college and then grad school, and now that I'm finally out of academia, I can relax and share my experience with others. When I engage in an hour of private tutoring I tend to go over-time by around fifteen minutes if I need to do so to wrap up whatever we were working on. Teaching is a passion, a calling, and a compulsion for me.

Tutoring has been one of the most meaningful and consistent threads throughout my academic journeyfrom helping young children build their first foundations in reading and math to supporting medical students preparing for the most challenging board exams of their careers. I have always believed that strong learning begins with meeting students where they are, understanding how they think, and giving them the tools and confidence to succeed at every stage of their development. My experience spans a wide range of ages and subjects. With younger students in kindergarten through middle school, I focus on building fundamental skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and early science through patience, encouragement, and interactive learning. For high school students, I emphasize stronger academic strategyteaching critical thinking, test-taking skills, STEM concepts, and effective study habits that prepare them not just for coursework but also for SAT/ACT-style reasoning. With college students and pre-medical learners, I offer structured support in biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, and research skills, ensuring that complex concepts become intuitive and applicable rather than overwhelming. At the graduate level, I specialize in tutoring medical students through the full medical school curriculum, including systems-based pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, biostatistics, and clinical reasoning. I also provide personalized preparation for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, helping students break down high-yield content, master UWorld-style questions, analyze test patterns, and build efficient study schedules tailored to their goals. My approach emphasizes clarity, pattern recognition, and practical frameworks that help students not only understand material but apply it confidently under pressure. Across all ages, what guides my teaching is the same philosophy: every student is capable of excellence when supported with patience, respect, and individualized guidance. I take time to understand each student's strengths, challenges, and learning style, transforming complex or intimidating topics into simple, structured, and approachable steps. More than anything, I strive to create a learning environment where students feel seen, capable, and motivatedbecause academic success grows out of confidence just as much as knowledge. Whether helping a child master early literacy, guiding a teenager through algebra or essay writing, mentoring a college student in science courses, or supporting a future physician through board prep, I feel honored to play a role in each student's educational journey. My goal is not only to help them succeed in the moment, but to empower them with the skills, mindset, and confidence to thrive long after tutoring ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from University of Louisville bring real academic experience from a rigorous institution known for engineering, business, health sciences, and liberal arts programs. Their firsthand knowledge of challenging coursework and university-level expectations means they understand exactly what students need to succeed—not just the material, but the study strategies and problem-solving approaches that work.

Alumni tutors can share insights about navigating difficult concepts because they've been through the same academic challenges themselves. They know which topics trip up most students, how to explain complex ideas clearly, and how to build confidence—all from personal experience. This makes their instruction more relatable and often more effective than tutors without that specific background.

Given University of Louisville's strong programs in engineering, business, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and pre-health sciences, tutors from the university often specialize in these areas. They're also well-equipped to teach humanities, test prep, and writing skills. When you connect with a tutor, you can specify your subject, and we'll match you with someone who has the right expertise and university background.

Your first session is about building a foundation for success. The tutor will assess your current understanding, identify specific challenges, and learn about your goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for an exam, or mastering a difficult concept. Together, you'll create a personalized plan that plays to your learning style and fits your timeline.

Every student learns differently, so personalized 1-on-1 instruction adapts to your pace, learning style, and specific goals. Your tutor will focus on the exact topics where you need help, use examples that make sense to you, and adjust explanations until concepts click. This targeted approach is far more effective than group classes because it eliminates wasted time on material you already know.

Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your location, but Varsity Tutors works with students at different budget levels. You can discuss rates and frequency directly when you connect with a tutor—whether you need weekly sessions, intensive prep for an exam, or occasional help with specific topics. There's no one-size-fits-all price; it's based on what works for you.

Many students notice better understanding within the first few sessions, but meaningful grade improvement typically takes 4-6 weeks of consistent work. The timeline depends on your starting point, the subject, and how often you meet. Your tutor will help you set realistic milestones and track progress so you can see exactly how you're improving.

Tell us your subject, location, and what you're working toward—and we'll connect you with a qualified tutor who attended or graduated from University of Louisville. You can start with an introductory session to see if it's a good fit, and if you want to continue, you'll work together on a schedule that fits your life. Getting started is straightforward and personalized to your needs.
