I'm passionate about sharing knowledge with others and working with students on concrete ways to improve how they study and retain information. My background is in the arts and I am a supporter of theatre, fine arts, and art history. I'd be happy to work with you!

I'm a current student at Smith College working towards my degree in Education & Child Studies and Theatre. I've been tutoring for many years and I have experience working with children of all ages and ability levels--from profoundly gifted students to students struggling with learning disabilities. I believe every student has the potential to succeed, it is just a question of finding the right entryway into the material. Since teachers don't always have the time to work individually with every student, that's where a tutor comes in!I'm a strong advocate for Carol Dweck's growth mindset theory of education, encouraging students to learn and grow from their mistakes rather than becoming discouraged and giving up. When I was in high school, I struggled a lot with math, and this caused me to view myself as a failure. Working with my own tutors and teachers helped me realize that I am capable of overcoming difficulties through perseverance, and that's a skill that I want to pass on to the students I tutor. Everyone makes mistakes and has struggles, but the important thing is that you can move past those roadblocks. As a tutor, I try really hard to help students connect the material they are studying inside the classroom to their passions outside the classroom. Sometimes all that's needed to make the material "click" is seeing how it is relevant to their own lives. My personal interests include theatre (especially Shakespeare), reading and writing, arts and crafts, baking, and outdoor activities with my dog. My favorite subjects to tutor are English, writing, and SAT prep, and my favorite part of being a tutor is seeing the "Aha!" moment when a student finally understands something that didn't make sense to them before.
Learning and intellectual growth in students has its fundamentals, as does soccer. Students build from basic comfort to a feeling of being invited, then to a knowledge that they are inspired, as well as an increasing confidence in their own voice as it is elicited in various ways. Subtly they sense the growing realization that they are part of a larger whole???of the human story, of life.I believe in a balance of progressive and traditional teaching. Tutoring one-on-one is the best of teaching. I like to present any given material in two ways, such as aurally and visually, so that various learners can access the depth of the content. An example might be to have them select quotations from Civil Disobedience, put them in their own words, write whether they agree with them or not and create a visual of a selected passage from Walden. Or in addition to an aural discussion of a Scene in Hamlet I will write a web on the board to map both concepts and characters.I believe in growth through learning. I believe it is life in a full sense.
I went to Smith College, where I completed majors with honors in English Language and Literature and Art History. I did my graduate work at Harvard University, where I became a Master of Education. I have always loved language and loved learning, which is why tutoring/teaching is a perfect match for meand you. With my help and the right tools, all of my students are able to overcome any difficulties that their studies might present, because each of my students is guaranteed the opportunity to express him or herself to the best of his or her abilities. I believe that one of my best qualities as a tutor is my skill at inspiring confidence in my students, so they feel comfortable expressing themselves, regardless of their level of ability. In my sessions, I put my clients at ease in such a way that even the most timid student is able to make the most of his or her time with me. Perhaps the secret is that many students are grateful to be in a session where they feel as though they are part of a clan, where relationships are based on respect for one another, and where ideas are listened to and discussed equally, and finally, where it is possible to express oneself in a sarcasm-free zone. While many teachers find it easiest to remain anchored to textbooks, I strive to find innovative ways of teaching that address the diverse needs of all of my students. In addition to my integration of technology into the curriculum in my sessions, I offer a variety of approaches to the disciplines.Although coverage of material is crucial, it is more important to teach students skills than things; also, students learn skills best through an interactive teaching style that demands their participation and challenges their abilities. Certainly, all students need grounding in their disciplines, and direct instruction has its place but I am not as interested in whether students know these concepts; as I am in if they can put them to critical use. My teaching philosophy has both traditional and radical roots, and rests, not only on my being an expert in my field, but on my being a partner in learning with my students.I look forward to our work and sharing my love of knowledge with you.
Hi! My name is Sophia, and I am a Biostatistics Masters student at Boston University. I graduated in May 2013 from Smith College with a BA in English and Spanish. In June 2013, I acquired my Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification and taught ESL to elementary, middle and high school students of varying levels in Shanghai, China from August 2013 to June 2014.The subjects of my lessons ranged from basic grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills to debate, the art of oral presentation, Americanculture and theatrical expression in English. While in Shanghai I also worked as an independent ESL tutor. From March 2012 to May 2012 I volunteered to teach English as a Second Language to Spanish-speaking immigrants with a local NGO in Cordoba, Spain. I am fluent in Spanish, have an intermediate knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and have studied Portuguese, Romanian, French, Arabic and Korean. Teaching in foreign countries has helped me to understand the value of developing a rapport with students (even across cultural and linguistic barriers) and has honed my ability to involve my students in the learning process in ways that engage their own creativity, powers of imagination and personal interests. In my spare time, I love to read, write poetry, roller skate, ride horses, sing karaoke and travel. I also used to play on a roller derby team in Shanghai, China and hope to join a recreational team in Austin!
I am a junior at Smith College in Northampton, MA. I am a pre-med psychology and chemistry double-major.I have been a tutor for around seven years and have experience tutoring a variety of academic subjects such as calculus, creative writing, and organic chemistry for older students and test prep and elementary subjects for younger students.I also have a lot of experience working with kids with a variety of disabilities. Some of the kids I've worked with are non-verbal and non-mobile, others simply require a detailed schedule to keep them focused. Regardless of what the kid needs, I'm prepared to work with the family to make sure they achieve their goals. Finally, I attended a Jewish day school for most of my life, where in addition to regular courses, I studied Hebrew and Judaic studies. I can also speak Spanish and some Turkish and ASL.
I received my B.A. in Philosophy and Neuroscience from Smith College, where I focused primarily on Buddhist philosophy. In college, I honed my abilities to communicate effectively, make cogent arguments, and work collaboratively to synthesize new ideas. I also nurtured a love of art, music, poetry, and dance during my undergraduate years, which gave me a deeply interdisciplinary perspective of knowledge and expression. Undergirding all of my passions is a lifelong love of learning and self-expression. I hope to inspire a similar sentiment in my students. Having attained 5's on English language and literature AP exams (as well as high marks on IB English language exams), I am well-equipped to help students achieve success on standardized tests and with essay writing. If you want to learn how to make strong arguments, write clearly and beautifully, and gain facility in using language to express subtle ideas and emotions, I am the tutor for you.
Hello! I graduated from Smith College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics. I am spending the next year pursuing my passion for teaching, before becoming a PhD candidate in the field of Applied Sciences and Technology at the University of California at Berkeley. I have been a tutor for the last few years. I have worked primarily with undergraduate physics and engineering students, both individually and in large groups. I am a great tutor because I am extremely patient. I believe that the best way to teach is to first listen carefully to how a student is approaching a problem. Rather than jumping in with my own favorite tricks, I help students understand which of their instincts are bringing them in the right direction, and then build on their previous knowledge and skills.
Sara is the Director of Counseling at the Buxton School, a college-prep boarding school in Massachusetts with a 3:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a 100% college placement rate. In that role, she uses her training as a Master of Social Work to help students set goals, navigate big decisions, and plan for the transition to college. Sara previously worked in college admissions, and draws on this experience to guide students and families. Sara is a firm believer that -- while undeniably challenging -- the college planning and admissions process can be a deeply meaningful and rewarding journey, and that with the right care and support each student can approach this transition with clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of self.
I am currently a senior at Smith College majoring in Sociology and concentrating in Women's Education. I have been tutoring for years, and due to my passion for reading, I concentrate mostly in English, Literature, Writing, Essay editing, and the reading and writing sections of the SAT. I love being able to help students discover a love of reading and writing like I have, and being able to apply it to their schoolwork and any other ways they need to succeed. For learning to be most successful, I believe in a collaborative, student-centered approach to tutoring, that is, to always keep in mind both what the student wants to learn and what they need to learn. It is important to make lesson plans as engaging and relevant to the student's life as possible, because this is the way to guarantee an interest in and love of learning. Although I know that my students have a lot to gain from me, I view tutoring as a two-way process in which both parties stand to learn from each other.
