Ever since bringing refugee children up to and beyond grade-level mathematics while tutoring in the mid-2000s, I have always been motivated by a spirit of service to community, society, and humanity at large. Teaching and tutoring is one small but essential part of that ethos.

I graduated from MIT with a Bachelor's degree in Physics.I believe the most important skill for a tutor is to adapt teaching style to the specific strengths and weaknesses of the student. My in-depth knowledge and experience with improvisation allow me to flexibly change problem solving approaches based on what the student needs. I am focused on engaging everyone I work with and am keenly attuned to whether people are truly following along. As an actor and director with a degree in science, I am equally at home with "science-y" and "arts-y" students. I am there to help foster a love for learning regardless of how much the student may or may not love the subject beforehand.

I love helping people! Whether it's learning math, writing, reading, etc. or playing sports, I really enjoy seeing other succeed via my assistance. I try to relate to students in whatever they enjoy and in doing so, apply concepts to our like interests to work through difficult subjects as well as to help foster a good, professional relationship. I have tutored several students in both math and English in the past and they have enjoyed resounding success and continue to reach out for my assistance. I look forward to working with and meeting many students and parents while helping them succeed in any way I can. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy playing sports (golf, basketball, softball, volleyball), playing with my dog, and hanging out with my wife. In addition, I am a meteorologist and oceanographer following my graduation at Penn State University with a BS in Meteorology. Finally, I am presently a student at MIT pursuing a Master's degree in Physical Oceanography.

I am an educator with over 10 years of experience teaching students of all ages. I am excited to expand my profession into the world of online teaching. As a high school teacher in Daytona Beach, FL, I have led classes from various subjects, including physics, engineering, and music. This has given me insight into a wide range of learning types and the approaches that work best for the individual student. Outside the classroom, I have tutored many that either needed help in a particular class or wanted a deeper understanding of their science and technology coursework. My passion is to share my love of learning with my students. My goal is to not only teach the material, but also to help the student connect with the material in a meaningful way. In doing so, may the students come to share my love of learning.

I am going to start undergrad at MIT in the fall of 2022 with the aim of majoring in linguistics. I have tutored elementary and middle school students in violin for four years, in addition to casual tutoring in history, writing, and languages. More important than helping my students reach the right answers is helping them ask the questions that will lead them to answers. I learn best when I find an aspect of the subject I'm studying that I'm passionate about, so I try to help my students find curiosity for the given subject. I enjoy tutoring violin, writing, and math the most.

I have always enjoyed the interaction with and learning from the students. Every student has the potential for success and I find this potential to be exciting. Tutoring presents new challenges and new potential successes. I believe that I can bridge the learning gap through my effective communication skills, patience and passion for learning. And I believe these qualities make me a great tutor.I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology from Claflin University and then went on to obtain my Master of Science degree in Microbiology at MIT. Both my undergraduate and graduate training has given me exceptional opportunities to strengthen my critical, analytic and problem-solving skills through a variety of courses from the quantitative and biological sciences discipline. I have applied those principles to independently developing and designing experiments to answer specific biological questions. Therefore as a tutor, I hope to cultivate in my students these same problem-solving and critical thinking skills. While at Claflin University, I conducted one-on-one sessions with undergraduate students focusing on Calculus I and Biology. Prior to my graduate studies at MIT, I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina where I took part in an after school program focused on teaching pre-elementary and elementary kids Spanish and Math. Most recently, I tutored middle-school math to students at the Excel Academy Saturday program based in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In each instance I learned how to develop effective lesson plans and applied different teaching styles to cater to each student's needs.I believe that I can make a valuable contribution to Varsity tutors through my educational background, tutor experiences and my passion for learning.

I graduated from MIT in June of 2016 with a Bachelors degree in Chemical-Biological Engineering and a minor in Public Policy. I tutor in a wide variety of areas, but specialize in high school and college math and science, as well as test prep. I've been teaching in some capacity since I was in high school; first tutoring peers in math and science through National Honor Society, then providing more informal one-on-one help to fellow students at MIT. I've also worked extensively teaching swim lessons for the past five years, particularly to beginners. Both in and out of the pool, I believe that a good lesson is one where the student is doing the thinking. I teach interactively, asking questions, listening to students. explanations, and probing students to produce the correct answer for themselves. I want to model thinking and questioning strategies that will allow a student to be successful without a tutor; I endeavor always to work myself out of a job. When I'm not tutoring or teaching swim lessons, I enjoy reading (especially mystery and crime novels), distance running, and long walks with my chocolate lab Snickers.

I am a sophomore at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, majoring in music and computational biology. I have always had a passion for teaching, and have experience tutoring students in a wide range of grade levels and subjects throughout my years in middle school, high school, and my freshman year at MIT through the Academic Teaching Initiative. I hope to help, and have had past success in helping, students succeed at whatever their goals may be; improved grades, improved standardized test scores, even college admissions. I hope to not only aid students in reaching checkpoints, but also to give them the personal interest in their material and the curiosity to help them move forward and continue to succeed in the future. The majority of my experience lies in tutoring middle school and high school math, middle school science, and biology, but I am also qualified to tutor high school science, a large number of AP exams, the PSAT, and the ACT. Given my current status as an undergraduate student, I am also uniquely able to offer mentoring and advice to any student interested in student life in college and college admissions. More than anything, I strive to be an approachable and reliable tutor whom my students feel that they can be comfortable with, because it is when a student is aware that their teacher is on their side that they feel comfortable thinking and asking questions in the ways that will help them grow. In my free time, I study music and vocal pedagogy, practice makeup artistry, and watch films.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from MIT bring exceptional academic credentials and deep subject expertise. These tutors have completed rigorous coursework in their fields and demonstrated mastery of complex material across engineering, mathematics, science, and other disciplines. Beyond their MIT education, many tutors have additional experience in their fields, whether through research, industry work, or years of teaching. When you work with an MIT-educated tutor, you're learning from someone who has successfully navigated some of the most challenging coursework available.

MIT tutors understand the level of rigor and problem-solving skills needed to excel in advanced subjects. They've learned how to break down complex concepts, recognize common misconceptions, and teach material in multiple ways—skills they developed while mastering their own challenging coursework. This background allows them to anticipate where students struggle, explain concepts from different angles, and help students develop the strong foundational understanding needed for success in competitive academic environments. Additionally, these tutors often understand the specific culture and expectations of selective colleges and institutions.

MIT tutors are particularly strong in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and computer science—the core subjects that define MIT's curriculum. However, many MIT graduates are also skilled in economics, biology, standardized test preparation, and college-level writing. The MIT curriculum requires students to master fundamental concepts across multiple STEM disciplines, so these tutors often bring interdisciplinary knowledge to their teaching. Whether you need help with calculus, organic chemistry, programming, thermodynamics, or test prep for competitive exams, you can connect with a tutor whose background aligns with your needs.

Learning from an MIT graduate or student offers unique advantages: you benefit from someone who has solved difficult problems at the highest level, understands how to approach complex material systematically, and knows what excellence looks like in rigorous academic settings. These tutors can share insights into effective study strategies, how to approach problem-solving in STEM fields, and how to build conceptual understanding rather than relying on memorization. If you're preparing for college, working toward a selective program, or pursuing advanced studies in science and engineering, an MIT-educated tutor can help you develop the thinking patterns and skills that lead to success in these fields.

Yes. Tutors with MIT backgrounds understand what selective colleges look for and can help you build strong foundational skills in STEM subjects. If you're aiming for competitive universities or preparing for advanced courses like AP Calculus, AP Physics, or IB Higher Level subjects, these tutors have lived experience with that level of material. They can help you develop problem-solving strategies, learn to explain your reasoning clearly, and build confidence with challenging content—all skills that strengthen both your academic performance and your college applications. Many students benefit from working with someone who has navigated similar academic paths.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors whose background and expertise match your needs. When you're looking for a tutor from MIT, you can specify this preference, and the service will help match you with qualified tutors who attended or graduated from MIT. The matching process considers your subject, your goals, your learning style, and the specific tutor's experience and availability. This personalized approach ensures that you work with someone whose background and teaching style are the right fit for your situation.

Absolutely. Advanced students often benefit greatly from working with tutors who can challenge them appropriately and introduce them to the deeper conceptual frameworks of a subject. MIT-educated tutors can help you move beyond memorizing procedures to truly understanding the principles behind the material. They're comfortable working with students who ask sophisticated questions, want to explore topics in depth, or are preparing for olympiad competitions, research opportunities, or advanced university programs. If you're looking to strengthen your understanding at an elite level, an MIT-educated tutor can provide the intellectual rigor and expertise to match your ambitions.
