About Me
It's exciting to learn things, but it's even more exciting to understand them. That's where I come from as far as my passion for helping students. It's something that I wish had been instilled at me in a younger age and if I can even help just one person understand something about the subject matter or even about themselves better through learning and engaging with material, then I consider that effort well spent. The majority of my experience working directly with students comes from time spent tutoring in person. I'm used to one on one sessions and small groups, as I feel like everything benefits by being more engaged with the process. I studied East Asian Studies with a focus in Japanese Language and Literature at Connecticut College and have spent a significant portion of time in Japan, previously having lived there and continuing to visit when I am able. The majority of my career and life experience is self-taught. I have a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies. I am currently working towards N1 proficiency in Japanese. I tutor Japanese and French primarily, but I have experience with High School English, Latin, Computer Literacy, Linguistics, History, Classics, and even cooking. Japanese is my favorite to teach - it is a language that I have loved for decades and helping others understand and communicate in it brings me a lot of joy. I love seeing things click and having a student feel like they are actually expressing their authentic self to other students and, ideally, other native speakers. I've spent my life immersed in the history, literature, and media of Japan and I'd like to think that my enthusiasm is infectious! When it comes to language, I strongly believe that everyone can learn another language, as long as it is taught to them in the right way. The key is making sure that someone can find something that they are passionate about in that language. It can be the language itself, but it can also be tied to the cultural experience or any number of things. I like to treat my tutoring as rather personal, tailored to the individual and group, with lots of participation. Repetition and engagement helps retention and I'm here to help you learn and understand, after all! I'm proudly part of the trans community and also neurodivergent!
