I take an active interest in who I am helping. Most tutors, like teachers, provide the information - the knowledge - without a concern for if the student is inspired to learn it. I ask more questions of the student than I give the knowledge he/she needs. I do not have a general method for tutoring, ...

Conversational Mandarin Tutor • +16 Subjects
Having enjoyed learning and completed my Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature and Bachelor of Science in Psychology form National Taiwan University, and Master of Arts in Research and Experimental Psychology from New York University, I love to share my knowledge and study techniques with my students. With several years' experience of private tutoring, I have been working with students at all levels and guiding them in achieving their best.As a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, I am proficient in both Pinyin and Mandarin Phonetic Symbols and can write professionally in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. I have studied linguistics, phonology, semantic, and Chinese paleography and have used them to facilitate my teaching with great success; I am also very familiar with both contemporary and ancient Chinese literature. I have five-year experience in private tutoring in Chinese, as both a language skill and a school subject, in preparation of the national college admission tests, and in undergraduate-level Chinese composition. I also wrote and edited a published preparation material for Chinese language of the National Basic Competence Test. In addition, I have worked on editing college and graduate school admission essays since 2005. Most of my students were accepted by top universities in Taiwan, such as National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University and National Yang-Ming University; while I, too, taught and designed the course for a student with learning disorder and had a desirable result. On the other hand, I have solid training and knowledge in psychology and statistics. I have experience in quantitative analysis with large empirical dataset; I am also familiar with statistic packages, i.e. SAS and SPSS, and have helped my peers with statistic procedures and software. Besides all above, I am experienced teaching study skills on middle and high school levels and helping college students adjust their studying strategies, and have written a chapter of published study guide for biology of General Scholastic Ability Test and Advanced Subjects Test, which are standardized tests for college admissions in Taiwan.Working together with my students, I encourage them not only to acquire the knowledge they need, but also to apply what they have learnt in the real life. It is most rewarding for me to motivate my students, help them explore their own interests and possibilities, assist them with setting their academic and life goals, and equip them with time management, organizational and academic skills.

I am currently a student at Case Western Reserve University for computer science. In high school, I was a member of the Peer Tutoring and Mentoring Club and enjoy working with students, primarily in math and science. My favorite subject is physics because it combines science with math and is actually applicable to real life. My learning philosophy is to just do practice problems. The more practice, the easier each problem will be. Somebody can spend all day just studying notes, but he or she will learn best by just doing practice problems. Outside of school, I own a website design business and I enjoy to do anything outdoors. I love snow skiing, water skiing, boating, hiking, and fishing.

My name is Matt and I'm an Aerospace Engineer. I graduated in 2015 from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. While I was there I also received a math minor, which helps me understand math at a more basic level. In high school I worked as a tutor and enjoyed helping those students. I loved the subjects I studied in college and my hope is to share my knowledge of math and physics with those who need extra help. Above all, I want to spread my knowledge to people who may need it.

I am a 2015 graduate of Texas Christian University with a double major in Economics and Political Science. I am currently an Associate Account Executive for Crystal & Company in the Employee Benefits department. While I was a student, I worked for 2 years as an in-home tutor for kids grades 6-12 and focused on study skills, organization and assistance with homework in math, English and Spanish and SAT preparation. During the fall of 2014 I worked with the TCU Athletics Department where I help the TCU Student-Athletes with Calculus and Economics. I enjoy tutoring both Math and English/writing because I am an analytical thinker and like to encourage students to challenge themselves and reach new goals. I was a Dean's List student for 6 semesters and have been awarded the Priscilla Tate research prize for Women and Gender studies at TCU as well as 2015 Texas A&M Outstanding Undergraduate Research prize for the Project for Equity.Outside of work, I enjoy watching college football, being active outdoors and spending time with my friends. My experience as a tutor has helped me learn how to cater to different learning styles and has taught me how to approach issues from different angles. I am both prompt and professional and would love to help your child grow into a successful student.

I taught high school level math classes for fourteen years plus an additional two years as a long term sub. I have taught college level math since 2008. I have much experience tutoring students both 1 on 1 and in groups, both at the high school level and the college level, and both during school time and on my own time. Students often ask to take my class again as they enjoy the way I teach and say they understand my teaching better than most teachers. I enjoy doing math and helping others to enjoy it as well.

Hi, my name is Alyssa and I am a math/reading/writing and organizational skills tutor for students from kindergarten to college. A little bit about me:In May 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Teacher Preparation, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in six different elementary school classrooms (ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics, statistics and liberal studies tutors at Dominican's Teaching Learning Center (TLC). In my one-on-one with undergraduates, I helped students who initially struggled with concepts to ultimately master the material. Further, I helped develop students' study, test-taking, organization, and problem-solving skills. My experience also includes tutoring high school students (algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions) privately. In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor for elementary through college levels with Cornerstone Learning. From February 2016 to present, I have been a tutor with Tutor Corps in San Francisco. I have had experience tutoring fifteen students through Tutor Corps from kindergarten up to high school in multiple levels of mathematics as well as reading, writing and organizational skills.I also have a passion in working with students who struggle with learning differences. At the age of eight, I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress despite my learning differences. As a tutor and teacher, I have a strong understanding of the needs of students. I am passionate about helping every individual go above and beyond, no matter what his or her learning style is. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was tutoring a first grader who struggled with ADHD. He had been held back for two years in a row, but after a semester of working one-on-one with him using visuals and skills/strategies that worked best for him, this student began acing all of his tests and moved onto second grade at the end of the semester. In addition to teaching math, I also enjoy teaching dance and choreographing. I am currently a company dancer with Peter & Co and perform/tour with the company. I am also a guest dancer for several other Bay Area dance companies and am a freelance choreographer. Furthermore, I am a faculty member of Marin Dance Theatre and Presidio Dance Theatre where I teach contemporary, ballet and private lessons (to students from elementary to high school) and choreograph contemporary works for the pre-professional division.

I am studying Chemical Biology in UC Berkeley. One of my passions is Organic Chemistry, which I used to loath but now enjoys after taking a year of it. Also, because I like helping others, I enjoys tutoring/teaching students who are struggling. During high school, I have tutored other high students after school on various subjects such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Latin. During college, I have held informal review sessions for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry for my underclassmen. I tutored my roommate and one of my underclassmen in Organic Chemistry. Finally, with a Graduate Student TA, I co-taught a Organic Chemistry Lab class section , where I answer questions regarding lab material and demonstrate lab techniques. Currently, I am interested in tutoring Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, and CalculusThere are three things I love about tutoring. First, tutoring allows me to solidify my mastery on the material I teach, as I believe one can learn more by explaining concepts to other people. This leads to the second thing l love, which is that tutoring helps me to practice my ability to explain concepts in a concise, easy-to-understand manner without leaving behind important details. Finally, I enjoy tutoring because the experience of helping others itself is fulfilling to me.

A lifelong learner, my heroes have always been my teachers. Now my goal is to be that person for today's students. I returned to school after a business career and earned my PhD. For the past 5 years, teaching and tutoring math and statistics students within the Minnesota State colleges and universities system has been both challenging and satisfying. Helping students overcome their math frustration is a highlight. These subjects are not for everyone. However, it seems reasonable that successful learning comes when tutoring complements individual interests and educational goals. Some people aspire to win an Olympic medal; scientific minds would like a Nobel Prize; and those who like more drama, seek an Academy Award. Graduation is our ultimate goal as it helps advance an improved quality of life. Looking forward to working with you during a successful school year.

I am currently working towards a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the State University of New York at New Paltz in their B.S./D.O. seven-year dual degree program affiliated with the New York Institute of Technology - College of Osteopathic Medicine. I am going into my second year of the program at New Paltz, and I have had experience tutoring many of my fellow classmates in difficult subjects especially math and science. I’ve also taken many AP classes that have helped me shine through my first year of college, in which case I can help those students who will be taking certain AP classes because I’ve taken those exams. I love math and science and these subjects have always been a strong suit and that’s why I chose to pursue a career in the medical field. Nevertheless, I found Spanish and the social sciences to be fairly straightforward which allows me to tutor these subjects with great clarity and focus as well. The one thing I stress to every student is that to completely comprehend subjects, one should not just memorize the steps to do the problems but rather embrace the concepts to learn the material inside out. As leisure, I watch a few T.V. shows that interest me and play video games. However, I mainly play sports such as basketball and volleyball and I’m very passionate about both sports because these sports teach many eternal lessons that I will carry through my life such as teamwork and dedication.

I enjoy working with people in an intellectually stimulating setting. I have gained the most satisfaction from tutoring not by pushing people beyond their perceived limits. I can simultaneously make people see the justification behind my passion for the sciences and encourage them to open their minds to it. My students actively sought out my help, and I wanted to live up to my role as an authority in my field.I like to set an agenda for each student in our sessions in order to create a structure in which they could relax and organize their thoughts. I spent the first two to three minutes listening to them talk about their day and their interests and hobbies to connect with them as a person and find out what learning style might fit them best. For example, I notice that visual learners would pay attention to my hand movements and verbal learners sometimes write down everything that I say. I then review laws and concepts that are fundamental to understanding chemistry and frequently relate them to popular topics such as sports, weather, and family.I plan let the students dictate the pace for the last half hour of each session. I ask a few questions to confirm that they understand what we are going over, but for the most part, my hope is for them to propose and answer their own questions. I know that every student has the scientific skills to recognize a pattern, relate the concept to something they know, and use logic, and a successful session entails that the student feels the same way.
