I chose to work with Varsity Tutors because I enjoy the challenge of teaching others. My experience in tutoring students first began when I was in high school. During this time, I worked at an after-school math center tutoring in elementary through high school math. In college, I majored in biology, and I had the opportunity to serve as a teaching assistant for an upper level anatomy course, as well as tutor students in an undergraduate neuroscience course. After graduation, I worked full-time in medical research and part-time in bioinformatics education where I developed educational materials for college bioinformatics courses throughout the US in addition to helping teach bioinformatics methodology to visiting faculty at Wash U. During my graduate program I served as a teaching assistant for a course in Epidemiology. The aspect of teaching that I most enjoy is the challenge of putting myself in the shoes of the student and viewing the material from their perspective to identify difficult concepts for the student and find ways to simplify those concepts to allow for better understanding of the material.

I've been a mathematician and tutor for about 15 years. I have also taught mathematics at the college level for the past 7 years. My research touches on the interactions between math and theoretical computer science, as well as number theory (largely the study of prime numbers). I've taught courses ranging from basic arithmetic up through linear algebra and multivariable calculus. The second most exciting thing about mathematics is that moment when something totally opaque and confusing suddenly solidifies into crystal clarity. It's the sort of moment that makes you shout "aha!" or "eureka!". The most exciting thing about mathematics is sharing that experience with someone else.

I am a current high school mathematics teacher at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA. In my time as a teacher I have had experience teaching classes at all levels ranging from pre-algebra to AP Calculus BC. Prior to this, I completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics education at the University of Maine. While studying as a graduate student, I had the opportunity to manage an undergraduate tutoring center for mathematics and science students, and I also designed and facilitated training workshops for middle and high school math teachers who were preparing to enact the Common Core State Standards. I am passionate about mathematics and computer science, and I love helping students to see the excitement and power of these subjects! Mathematics is the foundation for being able to critically analyze an astoundingly wide range of real problems, and I believe that students can greatly improve their ability to objectively reason about nearly any area of life through the study of math. In my spare time, I love to be active through activities like hiking, tennis, running, ballroom dance, and yoga.

I graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in December of 2012, and received my Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a focus in Supply Chain and Logistics. Throughout my undergrad career, I spent a lot of time mentoring freshmen as a teacher's assistant for an intro course, and tutoring peers within my major. I enjoy education, and love spreading my knowledge by using the best suited strategy for the student. While I tutor all levels of math, my favorite subjects are SAT & ACT level mathematics. For fun, I enjoy all sports, running, playing Xbox, and using math to win fantasy football match-ups.

I have a BS degree in mathematics from Temple University, and I am passionate about math. In fact, to say I am passionate is something of an understatement. Math is the most beautiful thing in the universe, and I want open everybody's eyes to this deep and wonderful truth. Math is something to be enjoyed. I believe that while knowing the formulas and procedures is important, memorizing mathematical formulas without appreciating the concepts is akin to memorizing the lines of a Shakespeare play without paying attention to the underlying prose. My strongest subjects are linear algebra and pre-calculus though I am proficient at tutoring all high school and college underclassmen mathematical subjects.I hope that my passion is contagious and that all of my students leave me not only having learned the material but understanding the beauty and wonderment of it all.
