I am also comfortable teaching all age ranges, including the elderly, since I have experience working with them as well. I have acted as a TA for an introductory programming course at Brown University, and received an award for my work as a TA.I always give my 100% to my students, and am a dedicated teacher and learner. I am a graduate of DePaul University with an International Studies degree. I also received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in Spanish and International Studies with a focus on Latin American Studies. Since graduation, I have translated, interpreted and tutored children in Spanish and ELL. I have also been a substitute teacher for at least two years. I strongly believe that "No Child shall be Left Behind." I am currently obtaining my teaching certificate for the State of Wisconsin in Spanish while attending Educate Wisconsin/St. Mary's University of Minnesota. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish, Latin American history, and International Studies which includes governance, history, culture, language, religion, economics, etc. In my experience helping struggling students by having fun keeps the student engaged in their studies. Every child should be provided the means to strive forward to gain the knowledge and skills to be a University student. It is important in this day in age to at least have your Bachelor's degree to get a good job and I understand that writing and reading is the most important to graduate. In my spare time I like to travel south to see my parents and many different areas in Mexico. I like to read newspapers about politics, volunteer during my spare time with the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, domestic violence shelters, etc. For fun, I am pretty laid back, I like to sing, I like to watch movies, independent films, and reality tv.

“The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards," wrote Anatole France. This statement is an excellent introduction to my teaching philosophy. I believe that the fundamental responsibility and challenge in teaching is to transmit one's own enthusiasm and curiosity to students. In my experience, once students are curious and engaged, teaching is much more effective and enjoyable. I have found this to be successful in lecture, laboratory, and individual tutoring settings.I am currently an adjunct lecturer in the physics department at the College of Staten Island, and I am working on my Ph.D. in theoretical/mathematical physics from Kent State University (Kent, OH). I have been tutoring and assisting students in introductory-level physics courses since 2004, and I greatly enjoy the teaching aspect of graduate school. As a teaching assistant in both laboratory and lecture settings over the course of six years, my average overall rating from undergraduate evaluations is 4.37 (out of 5). In addition to teaching college students, I have mentored high school students working on science fair projects in the Washington, DC, area. I am a member of the American Physical Society and the New York Academy of Sciences. My primary tutoring interests are physics, mathematics, and SAT prep, and in the rare moments when I’m not teaching or working on my dissertation, I enjoy practicing yoga and playing music.

I am a recent MBA graduate and relocated to Atlanta from Los Angeles, CA. I have tutored middle and high school students on everything from essay writing to math and I am also a volunteer for the Junior Achievement program. I believe that learning should be fun. I know that each student is different and I adapt my tutoring style to the student's style of learning. I am a visual learner and find that drawing out a problem really helps students grasp a problem or concept. In the long run, I want to work in education reform. In my free time, I like to run, try new recipes (or restaurants), travel to places near and far and hang out with friends.

I have tutored math (up to algebra 2), Spanish, and a variety of biology classes at the high school and college level.I really enjoy tutoring algebra since I enjoy the satisfaction of solving problems and recognizing patterns. I am also a big fan of astronomy and earth science as these subjects help us appreciate the vastness of our universe while also helping to make since of its complex processes.I like to use lots of questions and examples in tutoring as I believe learning is most meaningful when it is connected to your own experiences. When not teaching or tutoring, I love to spend time with my two adorable cats, Toph and Iroh, or go for a hike and discover a new trail.

Growing up, in my opinion, is the most important part of adolescence. I grew up in a household where my mom, a single parent working many hours to make ends meet was out of the house a lot. As the oldest child I learned to start preparing dinner on the days that my mom didnt have time to. I set a good example for my sisters. I enforced rules such as bedtimes and I took the mantle and achieved the responsibility of the leadership position in my mothers absence. I did extracurricular activities and sports such as track & field and afterschool clubs. But towards sophomore year, my involvement in afterschool activities decreased, my mom got a new job with a different schedule that required me to pick up my sisters from school every day.I think that I had to grow up a little earlier than most kids around my age. Not many people that I know have grew up in the same circumstances that I did. I believe that this experience has and is continuing to make me grow into a more mature person with good character and strong leadership skills such as patience, determination, perseverance and self-sacrifice. I learned that there is a time and place for everything, which especially pertains to balancing schoolwork, social life and responsibilities. Many people especially my mother and sisters have too much reliance on me for something like that to be an option. Though my mother is everything for us and we would literally have nothing if it werent for her, there are even times when she says to me, where would we be without you, or youve helped me so much, I cant imagine how we would have had ended up without you.

As the oldest child in a family of 8, I took on the role of unofficial tutor at a young age. I helped my siblings succeed in classes where they had uninspired or overburdened teachers. I've tutored in a wide variety of subjects, from college chemistry to middle school algebra. I learned from working with my brother Joseph, who has autism, that every student requires a different approach. I scored in the 98th percentile on the SAT and many AP exams, and I've helped many people increase their scores on standardized tests. I'm an engineering student, so I use math, chemistry, and physics knowledge on a daily basis. I bring a systematic problem-solving approach to tutoring. I'm happy to bring my patience and experience to Varsity Tutors, and to help more people achieve success!
