My name is Julie and I am a PhD Student at Tufts University studying Nutritional Biochemisty and Biostatistics. I first discovered my passion for tutoring as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, where I worked as an Organic Chemistry study group leader. I joined Varsity Tutors after graduating, and have since been working one-on-one with undergraduate and graduate students in the Boston area. During these experiences, I have learned how to be both an effective tutor and an encouraging mentor. I guide my students through challenging questions; helping them understand the process as much as the answer and gain confidence along the way.Fun Facts:* I worked for a non-profit for 2 years, developing and writing nutritional articles for a monthly newsletter* I love to juggle and I started the first student run juggling club at the University of Michigan* I was born and raised in Newton, MA

Discovering how you learn is as important as the actual subjects you wish to learn. I believe that my students best succeed when they develop an awareness of their educational strengths and weaknesses. I believe in emphasizing healthy study routines, the courage to learn from failure, and an openness to change.Like my students, I expect that I will also learn from my practice and refine my teaching style. I welcome open discussions of ways to improve each tutoring session.

Organic chemistry can be a challenging subject, so it is important to seek the right guidance. With 7 semesters of experience as a teaching assistant at the University of Pittsburgh, I have had a lot of experience mentoring students on the subject. My responsibilities as a TA included teaching recitation and supervising organic chemistry labs, tutoring undergraduates 4 hours a week, creating and grading quizzes and exams, and grading exams from lecture courses. Having someone with this vantage point guide you through the subject would be a great asset. I have a master's degree and am a published organic chemist. I am now applying to doctoral programs to start in fall 2016 and am tutoring students in the Pittsburgh area until then. I look forward to helping you ace organic chemistry.

One quote that defines who I am would be, A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others by Ayn Rand. This quote defines who I am because the person that I have become is motivated by the will that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it. If theres a will, theres a way. I dont have to have the desire to beat others when it comes down to work. Everyone journey isnt the same; therefore, why compete against someone who has a different journey? There is a desire in many people to prove their worth to others. If you are talented and want to build upon that, you should focus on your skills and hone them so that you can reach your goals. If you are more keen on getting ahead of others, you will never be focused on your goals because you attention is diverted elsewhere. Your desire to achieve something is your personal goal. If you are serious about achieving your goal, competition will not deter you. Your success is not dependent on others failures. If you are more motivated by the desire to beat others, it means that you are not sincere about your goals. It shows that you do not have confidence and faith in yourself.

I'm a recent graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where I received my degree in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. During my time at Edinboro, I was offered a tutoring position with the chemistry department in the beginning of my junior year. From then on, I was a constant face in the tutoring room, absorbing knowledge from other tutors and helping fellow students who needed it. This is where the majority of my tutoring experience comes from. At Edinboro, I tutored many different chemistry subjects, including General Chemistry, Principles of Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, Biochemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. Currently, I am working at Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) as an analytical chemist in the chromatography department. My job at PPG allows me to use my chemistry skills every day to analyze incoming samples and keep my chemistry knowledge fresh. My goal as a tutor is to ensure that students get the knowledge they need to not only pass a test, but to understand the material in a way that will help them use their knowledge for future classes and beyond. Outside of science, I enjoy reading (Harry Potter!), skiing, playing The Sims, and enjoying the wonderful foods the world has to offer.

Examining the small processes and components in this world has been an intriguing habit of mine since I was in middle school. This passion made me fall in love with biochemistry in high school. Studying human metabolic pathways, including chemical reactions and cell communication, perfectly fulfilled my passion for understanding how smaller and simple processes work in conjugation with each other to create an intricate and fully functional larger organism. Now, I am a Biochemistry major at Tufts University, and I have aspirations to attend medical school after my undergraduate studies. This environment at Tufts helped develop my passion in the sciences and made me a more well-rounded person. I enjoy serving as a mentor, whether it includes tutoring or simply giving advice. My tutoring style focuses on identifying where the thought process becomes cloudy when a student looks at a problem or standardized test. I target this thought process and ask questions to guide the student to think about a better way to approach the problem. This way, the student is able to come up with the answer rather than have me tell them how to solve it properly. I mentored 5th and 6th graders when I was finishing up middle school and served as a mentor for freshmen in high school. At Tufts, I am also a mentor for premedical students and have thoroughly enjoyed every encounter I've had within these experiences.

I was once in the same shoes of many Varsity Tutors' students. I was struggling to learn my subjects and preparing for the SAT standardized test. I came from a rural high school (DuBois, PA) with no AP classes as well as no Honors classes. I was projected that engineering would be too difficult for me and that I should pursue something less rigorous. I ended up graduating with a Honors degree in chemical engineering and a minor in mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University. I then received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University doing all of my research work with Sandia National Laboratories. I achieved these goals by setting high expectations for myself and striving every day to meet these expectations. I am a tutor that predominantly focuses on STEM and Business subjects from high school through graduate school as well as standardized tests. I really do not have a favorite subject here. I just enjoy teaching students who desire to learn and improve themselves. When I was an undergraduate student as well as a teaching assistant in graduate school teaching first semester students, I could take a person the night before the exam that had no clue of what was going on in class and help them achieve a B on the exam the next day. Standardized tests such as the SAT/ACT exam comprise various courses in high school and I cannot teach someone everything they need to know in one night or if a person is weeks behind in the understanding of the course material. Whether it is a standardized test or learning another subject; an assessment must be determined of where the student is currently in their understanding of the material. Next a game plan must be put together to get the student from where they are currently at to where they want to go. The fact of the matter is unless a student has always struggled in mathematics since kindergarten, they can achieve a perfect or near perfect score on the SAT/ACT mathematics section. The only traits that are required are a high level of expectations as well as the desire and effort to achieve those expectations. When it comes to solving problems, I will always ask the student on how they would solve a particular problem. Their answers can range that they definitely know how to solve it to they have absolutely no idea. I would then guide them along through each problem with the goal to have them understand a correct approach needed and to instill in the student a better understanding of the material as time goes along. As far as more information about myself, I am a person that enjoys learning and growing in all pursuits and my favorite hobby is working out and lifting weights at my local Planet Fitness. Additional Information: I am a STEM based tutor for Varsity Tutors in which I tutor everything from entry level to advanced subjects in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, all Engineering disciplines, and MBA courses. I am continuously adding both courses in an individual field as well as fields themselves to tutor. I tutor from 6th grade to graduate school as well as students with mental disabilities. I help students from inner city schools to the top boarding schools in the US to state public universities as well as the ivy league. I work with students at international universities along with international students in the US as well as adults going back to school.
