I am a tutor, a theater director/writer, and a recent graduate of the University of Chicago, where I got my B.A. in Theater and Performance Studies. I have experience as a writing tutor working with students in elementary school through high school and as an assistant teacher in elementary schools and kids' theater classes. I also have experience critiquing and offering feedback on plays by college students and professional playwrights.In both academic and artistic settings, I love language almost as much as I love learning about the people I'm working with and fine-tuning the ways I work with them. My goal is always to make the process as productive and supportive as possible. I see tutoring as collaboration between tutor and student. I like to start by helping a student discover what they find interesting about an assignment and then what they find most challenging. Over the past six years I've made dozens of short films and video art pieces, and freelanced on independent documentary projects. I have worked on television shows for Major League Baseball Productions, produced content for activist groups, and programmed for UnionDocs, a microcinema in New York. More recently, I've coordinated and facilitated retreats for emerging adults, focusing on personal growth skills and political education. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but I'm most passionate about English, Literature, and History. I've recently (and successfully) tutored myself in test preparation skills, so I am also very prepared to tutor test-prep. In my experience as a tutor, I have a great track record helping students develop their interest in reading anything! I have a deep belief that education is about practice, and that by practicing anything enough, any student can improve.

I began teaching English and math to middle school students in 2012. When I was working at Urban Science Academy in NYC, I remember one particular student of mine who had anxiety when taking tests. They become scatterbrained and unfocused, unable to stop shaking their leg and playing with their pencil, rather than using it. A few weeks leading up to the state tests, I led students in a class debate while teaching a unit on argumentative essay writing. Through my support and guidance, this student spoke with confidence and poise while using evidence to back up his claim. This moment solidified my passion for creating an inquiry-based learning environment where students are critical thinkers, feel empowered, engaged in the material they are learning, and inspired to speak their opinions confidently.In the five years I have been teaching, I am most proud of building valuable and trusting relationships with my students. These relationships spark higher motivation for learning and more positive and healthy social interactions. In my 7th grade math classroom this year, I worked with a student who had consistently scored low on his quarterly assessments up through this year. He struggled with impulse control and had a difficult time focusing for longer periods of time; yet he was very bright, hard working, and asked questions in class everyday. After I worked with him in a small group setting and helped him build confidence, he jumped 30 points. This was a huge success and confidence booster for him. As a tutor, I will bring the qualities I have developed as a classroom teacher, creating a safe environment where students can think outside of the box, make mistakes, and take control over their own learning, to my tutoring sessions.

At Kumon, I worked both one-on-one and in a group setting with children, to help them advance their math, reading, and writing skills.
