I have a PhD in biological sciences from Florida State University and completed several years of post-doctoral studies at the National Institutes of Health. Teaching allows me to fulfill what I believe to be a fundamental responsibility of biologists: to communicate information to students so they can make informed decisions regarding their lives and the environment they live in. In addition, it allows me to share my vast knowledge and experience with future scientists and colleagues. I also want students to appreciate and value biological diversity and to leave my students with an increased sense of awareness. Below are several objectives I strive to achieve as an educator. Objective 1: Students should understand the relevance of biology to their lives. I emphasize relevance by discussing current research studies and findings pertinent to the topic at hand by asking students to share their knowledge on the subject and by discussing how I have found the knowledge useful. Objective 2: Students should know where to find information, how to critically evaluate that information, and how to make an informed decision based on their understanding of the issues. Objective 3: Students should understand that biological issues are interconnected with economics, politics, history, and culture and should be addressed in context. Objective 4: Students should be actively engaged in the learning process.Outside of academia, I am an avid soccer player and fan of the game.

My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests. As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. But for now, as I watch my own children grow up, tutoring is a wonderful way for me to do what I love and have the flexibility to be at home with my young children.

I am a 27 year old prior 4th year medical student taking some extended leave to start a family and get married. I triple majored in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry in college with a pre-medical focus. I then came to Washington, D.C. to begin medical school and have completed all but one semester of my rotations.I have tutored since I was in middle school as a peer educator. I worked professionally as a tutor during college for applerouth tutoring for 2 years and was a TA and peer educator in college from freshman year until senior year. I have taught everything from intro biology courses to physical chemistry while in college and continued tutoring well into medical school during the first two pre-clinical years. My approach varies on what the student requires. Some students want to make major changes in short periods of time which require a more focused approach and a more hands on methodology for quick significant gains. For students with more time on their hands and a more difficult time grasping material less hand-holding is required and a more directed approach can be used to guide students in the right direction.

I am a current sophomore at Columbia University working towards a bachelors in Medicine, Literature and Society while on a pre-med track. The nature of my major is such that I am taking classes in and have experience with STEM (medicine), the humanities (literature) and social sciences (society). I have a good deal of experience teaching grades 4-9: before attending Columbia, I took a gap year, throughout which I assistant taught middle school math and science, focusing on basic genetics. I also teach through Columbia via an organization called Peer Health Exchange, which allows me to work with a group of 9th graders and to teach a comprehensive sexual health and wellness curricula. I myself had tutors throughout high school and even in some college classes, so I understand intimately how helpful a good tutor can be! In my spare time I like to read, sew, cook with my roommates, and play soccer on the Columbia Lawns.

My approach to teaching and tutoring centers around my background as a liberal arts student turned pre-med. I attended Wesleyan University and then decided after college to pursue medicine, completing a one year post-baccalaureate premedical program at Bryn Mawr College. Having personally undergone the transition from a humanities to a science student, I feel passionately that the sciences can be learned by any student, even those for whom it might feel a little more challenging. Working as a tutor for biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry, and neuroscience, I actively implemented this philosophy, finding creative ways to approach complex concepts. For example, I might steer a writing student studying organic chemistry to explain a reaction as a narrative of molecular interactions, rather than beginning with a complex problem. In the context of shifting careers, I have also taken a number of standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, and MCAT. My approach with these tests emphasizes strategy over content; a particular vocabulary word may or may not appear on the actual test, but knowledge of how to approach a passage and its correlated questions will help regardless of content.
