I am a junior at the University of North Georgia. I am majoring in accounting with a minor in Japanese. I have been teaching with Varsity Tutors for two years, focusing mostly on preparing students for the ISEE and teaching Japanese. The subjects I most enjoy teaching are Japanese, math, and English, though I am happy to help in whatever subject is needed, including reading comprehension and history. I enjoy helping others to become the best at a subject as possible, and I believe that the learning process is just as rewarding for the tutor as it is for the student. As an infant of only eight months old, I was adopted from China into a loving American family. From an early age, I was the most ambitious student in my classes and always challenged myself past my comfort zones. In high school I took all honors and AP courses and graduated with a 4.0 GPA unweighted and a 4.97 GPA weighted considering those honors and AP classes. I am currently attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick pursuing my major in Urban Planning and Design and my minor in Psychology and possibly Italian as well. For my future career goals, I plan to live in a city, preferably Philadelphia, and be an urban planner and designer, redeveloping and revitalizing rundown neighborhoods by making them attractive to the public again. I want to leave my mark on the world and be able to say I enhanced the lives of all those who are residing in, working in, or merely visiting the city.My background in mathematics is very extensive. I took all honors mathematic courses up through AP Calculus BC in high school and Calculus I in my first year of college. I also have in-depth experience with English. In high school, I took AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition as well as honors English classes. Besides taking classes in these subjects, I tutored at my local library with a volunteer group called Homework Helpers for all four years of high school. I tutored students in kindergarten up to eighth grade in all subjects. Not only did I help them with their homework but I also prepared them for upcoming tests and gave them study skills that would carry them through the entirety of their academic career. I view tutoring as a way to enhance the student's learning experience so that what they take away from school is not just memorized facts but knowledge and education in their purest form.

In 2011, I graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Arts. After my graduation, I traveled to Bangkok, Thailand where I taught kindergarten in a bilingual school for one year. Then, I returned to the US and attended the Teacher Licensure Program at the University of Richmond. I hold a Virginia state teaching license in elementary education and in the 2014-2015 school year I will be teaching first grade. My tutoring experience includes volunteering with a program for middle school students who were English language learners preparing for state standardized tests. While I was at the University of Richmond, I participated in their reading tutor program where I worked one-on-one a student developing his reading and writing skills. I enjoy teaching language arts and mathematics to students using research-based strategies to help them succeed. There is nothing more rewarding than guiding a student to that break through moment when a subject they never thought they would understand finally makes sense. I believe it is important to use assessment and students' performances in order to make informed instructional decisions that target their specific needs. In my personal time, I enjoy working out and playing tennis, as well as art and photography.

I want to make my lessons fun and engaging, but also be excited about the lesson so that students can also be excited about the subject. I teach special education: math and writing, including co-taught math within the general education classroom.As I said, I love to learn. I earned my Bachelor's degree (2008) from Ball State University (in Muncie, Indiana) and have recently earned my Master's degree (2015) from Walden University. Proudly, I had a 3.6 GPA in my Bachelor's and a 4.0 in my Master's. Although I teach special education, I have a desire to help all students.
