I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I'm a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in both English and Psychology with a minor in Biology. Ever since I was a child I've loved helping those around me understand reading comprehension better, write their own material with confidence, and as soon as I learned Algebra, I endeavored to help others understand that, too. I've also taught students how to read music and march together in band as a section leader both in high school and college. As far as teaching goes, I think it's the most successful approach to meet the student where they are; for example, some need metaphors, some need physical examples, others need to be asked clarifying questions along the way. That's why I love teaching reading comprehension (as a more subjective topic) and Algebra (the most objective one), as I think it's paramount to be well-rounded to have the best chance at personal success. This is especially important to me having worked with students and learners with neurodivergent traits such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, high anxiety, and more; I want them to have as much confidence in their abilities as anyone who doesn't have those additional influences.

Hobbies

When I'm not working, I love writing poetry and creative nonfiction, reading, and editing. I also grew up heavily involved with music, so I sing quite a bit as a soprano, especially musicals and anything where I have to hit the high notes. I take time to volunteer as a crisis counselor, as well, as I did study Psychology in college and understand how important it is to have that kind of support, even if it's coming from a faceless stranger. All this to say if my hobbies and interests can bring joy, I'm going to strive for it.
