Hello! I'm Anne, a former English Literature and Spanish student at Georgia College, who has now completed my degree. I'm deeply passionate about both of these subjects, and even more about helping others achieve their learning goals. I have experience tutoring my peers in college Spanish classes, who have been very satisfied with my teaching. I make a point of thinking through the very best way to meet a student where they are, and to help them get where they want to be with the material. During lessons, I take an interactive approach to help students not only memorize information, but actively work through the processes, helping them to internalize the lesson much better.

English subjects, involving reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, have always been my strongest subject. I am confident in my abilities to read, analyze, and form opinions about materials, as well as my ability to write strongly and coherently. In all my years of education, I have become extremely familiar with the thinking processes involved in these tasks. Trial and error was a frequent and important part of my learning, and I am in a great position now to make that process more streamlined and enjoyable for students.

My favorite subject to teach is Spanish, which I learned as my second language. I began learning it in high school, on to college, but it was in my independent studies that I mastered it to the level I have now. In recent years, I have reflected constantly on my own progress with language acquisition and the things that helped or hindered it. I tried almost every method out there to learn, and can give perspective on how to make the most of learning techniques. I also discovered many times that certain key concepts were never taught to me in the way that would've been the most helpful. Even the most apparently basic things, like letter pronunciation, are often never explicitly taught in a way that makes sense for new learners. When introducing a new concept into the student's understanding, I almost always bring in context from the student's native language, which I find key to forming a holistic understanding of Spanish and English. This doesn't mean I rely on direct translation, which is often not helpful; instead, I find connections between sounds, Latin root words, and grammar patterns to reveal how similar it is to the language they already speak.

Spanish is a far cry from completely separate from English; the two languages are already in such beautiful conversation with each other. A student only needs to be taught the correct way to appreciate that, find the beauty, and not become overwhelmed. I try to remember my own obstacles in learning a concept, and consider what would have been the best way to have had it explained to me. I would truly love to help you, or another student, improve in what have been such meaningful subjects to me. There is so much to be gained from learning these things, and I would be honored to assist with the process.
