I am a (somewhat) recent college graduate with a deep interest in history and a desire to share that interest with others. I recently took a hiatus from my career to receive medical treatment for a personal health concern now fully resolved. During this hiatus I reevaluated my career path and am currently exploring new options outside of sales. One of the options I have explored over the course of this past year is education. I took multiple courses on educational theory and practice at Providence College, tutored, and spent 30 hours teaching and observing a social studies classroom at Toll Gate High School in Warwick, RI. My motivation for doing so was born of my love of history and the realization of the importance of education in a democratic society. I want the work I do to have value beyond the dollar amount attached to it. There is no more valuable profession than that of education, in my opinion. Classroom teaching, however, is not well suited to my personality and skill set. I am far more effective in a more personal setting. Removing the element of classroom management from the equation allows me to give the student the attention they require and deserve. Many of the ills in our current education system can, in my opinion, be explained by a severely unbalanced student to teacher ratio. Few students receive the necessary attention required to achieve true mastery over the subject matter at hand. I hope to do my part in resolving this issue by providing this attention through tutoring. I have a strong background in all things reading, writing and history. As a history major at St. Lawrence University I wrote over 20 research papers on topics ranging from the failures of the French High Command at the outset of WWII to cultural development in the face of conflict in Mogadishu, Somalia. Prior to my time at St. Lawrence I attended Milton Academy, perennially ranked in the top 5 (currently number 2) Prep Schools in the country. Milton's rigorous English program laid the foundation for my strong understanding of English Grammar and the characteristics of great writing. I recently revisited these grammar principles while earning my TESL Certification. I hope to use my passion and experience to help as many students as I can realize their goals as students and as people.
