Certified Tutor

I am writing to express my interest in becoming a math, economics, and social studies tutor for Varsity Tutors. My extensive subject knowledge from my high school and college courses, real world application of that knowledge, and wide-ranging professional experience make me an ideal candidate to become a tutor.

My coursework in high school and college, in particular in the fields of math, economics, and social studies, provide me a solid knowledge base from which to tutor. In high school, I took AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics and scored well enough on both exams to earn college credit. I also took the requisite courses of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. As for social studies, I scored well on the Advanced Placement tests for AP World History, AP US Government, and AP US History. While I was in college, I majored in economics and took Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Microeconomics and Macroeconomics courses. I also took several statistics and econometric courses. These course not only taught my about economic theory, but also sharpened my math skills by forcing me to apply the calculus, linear algebra, and probability I had learned in other courses. To supplement my economics degree, I also took several math courses including Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, and Ordinary Differential Equations.

My professional experience has allowed me to apply many of the math and economics concepts I studied to real world situations. As a research assistant at AidData and intern in the office of the chief economist at the National Credit Union Administration, I used my knowledge of economics as well as my econometric, statistics, and algebraic skills to complete various research tasks; including authoring a paper published in the undergraduate economics journal the Developing Economist. Finally, as an associate analyst at NERA Economic Consulting, I consistently worked on projects that required me to apply my knowledge of economic theory and high degree of statistical literacy.

My wide range of professional experience has also strengthened fundamental skills that are valuable for tutoring. At NERA, I developed an extremely strong attention to detail by following what they called the NERA checking process. This attention to detail will serve me well when checking the work of my students and ensuring I teach them the coursework thoroughly. At Justine PETERSEN, I assisted in developing the evaluation system for their credit building counseling program. This required extensive planning and preparation, which would translate well to planning and preparing tutoring sessions for students. Finally, at Justine PETERSEN, I had the opportunity to work with a socioeconomically, racially, and educationally diverse group of people, which makes me confident I will be able to successfully develop a connection with students from a wide array of backgrounds.

The opportunity to become a tutor and help people gain a fuller understanding of the world is an exciting prospect to me. My education is one of the things I treasure most in my life. I can point to at least one instance everyday where a class I have taken has enriched my understanding of the world around me. That continuous gratification would not have been possible without the tutoring of my wonderful teachers and parents. As a tutor, I would be able to help my students achieve that enrichment as well.
