Certified Tutor
Hello, I am a tutor in the Kalamazoo area. I have a PhD in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences from the University of Michigan and I am considering switching fields, possibly to education. I have almost a year's worth of tutoring experience in college-level calculus and physics and SAT preparation. I am seeking to tutor middle school through college-level physics, calculus, precalculus, geometry and algebra. I am open to tutoring other subject areas pending a review of the corresponding curriculum.
My usual tutoring method for STEM subjects is based upon an assessment of a student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject area. In the first session, I have the students answer a few questions for self-assessment. Based on the self-assessment, we proceed to work through a variety of problems, with a focus on topics that the student finds difficult. We work through each problem with dialogue so that I can examine the student's thought process and form my own assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. After my assessment is complete, we proceed to work on more challenging problems until the student has mastered all key concepts. This process may span several sessions or may be repeated multiple times per session, depending on the subject material. The goal of my tutoring method is to maximize the number of homework and exam questions the student can successfully answer independently.
I am also open to students who have a specific topic they need help on immediately.
Note on Python: I am qualified to tutor introductory Python or general programming, but the only Python libraries I have much experience with are Numpy and Matplotlib.
