As a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering major at Rice University, math and science are two things I basically have to be comfortable with. Helping my students understand the application of the things they're learning is basically a necessity; no more "But who even uses algebra," because pretty much everyone will whether they realize it or not. It's really making those connections that is important. Another important, if somewhat unrecognized, part of engineering includes communication and writing. I love to help my friends in college review and revise their essays. I actively continue to take writing classes, and being paid to do something I do for fun is amazing, so please feel free to send essays my way!
So, some background on my tutoring experience: I officially began tutoring in high school when the Science National Honors Society asked me to tutor my peers in chemistry. I did this for two years. Teaching my sister multiplication and division started my expansion into math. Eventually, I became a paid algebra tutor and was also asked to help other students at school with their calculus. I will say that my recent tutoring experience has been with middle and high schoolers, though I have 6 years of summer camp counseling to pull from with elementary schoolers (I also informally taught my younger sister to read before she reached kindergarten). My experience so far has reinforced how maintaining a flexible approach and identifying each individual student's learning style are key to successful tutoring.
