I first started tutoring because I realized that it was one way where I could take what I have learned and put it to effective use. In a sense, I wanted to give back to students who were going through and perhaps struggling through the same academic courses that I had to trudge through myself. I soon discovered that I really enjoyed working with others, and since then, I have always focused on building a relationship with those whom I tutor. By being able to relate to those who I tutor, I can more effectively communicate to my students and help them progress over time.
I am a recent graduate of Saint Louis University with a bachelor's in biomedical engineering and a minor in mathematics. The reason I studied engineering and mathematics is because of their complementary natures. In math, you deal with numbers and think through multistep problems logically because everything works out so pristinely in the end, with one final definite answer. Meanwhile, engineering deals with applying all the theory and pristine numbers we crunch to the unpredictable real world. Studying these areas for four years has taught me to become a better problem-solver. Problem-solving is a process, and sometimes this process is logical and efficient, but in other times, it can be more creative with twists and turns. When I am tutoring students, this is usually the focus of our sessions. The way the student approaches and solves a problem and the process the student goes through is probably the most crucial part, no matter what subject they are studying, be it math, science, reading, writing, and everything else. If you are taught to approach the problem correctly, you will be able to accomplish a lot more with what you know. As the old proverb goes, teaching a man to fish will feed him for a lifetime. Thus, I am always trying my best to teach my students to fish for a lifetime.
