I recently retired after more than 40 years in the business world. I had the great fortune of working for a now obsolete industry, selling yellow page advertising. These sales and management positions gave me the opportunity of talking with, learning about and teaching business owners of all types and sizes. This was the greatest business education possible. It is here that I learned the value of communication, specifically reading, writing and public speaking, and how to connect with people with little to no education as well as those with post-graduate degrees effectively. I continued working with entrepreneurs and small business owners with other companies and continued to hone my communication skills.

Academically, I worked and went to school and after 39 years, I received my Bachelors of Arts degree in Business Management from Eckerd College in 2009. One of the many reasons it took me so long was that I changed my major several times and each time I returned I needed more courses to complete for that degree. It was persistence and desire that drove me to earn that degree.

Learning is as essential as breathing. If we don't learn, we will repeat mistakes and repeated mistakes results in more of the same. Subjects that appear to be useless to us, when presented in a different and more relevant manner can have dramatic and life-changing effects.

Subject matter needs to be presented in a way that draws the students in so they can see how the lessons learned and mastered will benefit them.

Now, at this time, I want to take the lessons I have learned and pass them along to the next generation of leaders.

Ultimately, the art of communication is the key to learning and learning is the key to success.
