I have been teaching for nineteen years in Shelby County Schools. Presently, I teach kindergarten at Cromwell Elementary. I have also taught in grades 1-4, and GED students with an emphasis on reading and writing skills. Literacy is a very vital component for students in this nation. I believe that if every child can read then they can be successful in any career that his or her heart desires. I do not permit students to use the word cant in their vocabulary in my presence. I know that every student can and will be successful with perseverance, integrity, and consistency.
During my career as an educator, I have been able to empower teachers, parents, and students in my community. Each year, I provide my parents with several opportunities to communicate with me throughout the school year. Parents can meet with me face to face, on the telephone, email, and any type of written communication. It is important to ensure that parents feel comfortable to communicate with me at any time in regards to their child. Throughout, the year, I maintain a positive relationship with teachers in my school and district. It is important to share different academic techniques and strategies with others to ensure that students are receiving effective instruction during the school year. I also provide professional development for teachers and parents in my school. I routinely utilize quantitative and qualitative data to address students academic and behavioral strengths and weaknesses to guide appropriate instructional decisions.
Teaching is a career in which learning is a continuous journey. Each year, I attend various professional development activities to enhance my knowledge in areas that I teach. In 2016, I became an America Achieves Fellow and recently, I have been selected to join the LRTT (Limited Resource Teaching Training) Fellowship in South India this summer. My goal as a teacher is to always enrich the skills I need to make a difference beyond the classroom environment in which I teach each year.
My hobbies include marathon running, cycling, swimming, yoga, and traveling. I have completed a marathon in all 50 states and seven continents. My running adventures has permitted me to gain friendships around the world. I always tell people that the world has so much to offer but you have to be willing to love people, adapt to change, and always keep an open mind.
