As a tutor who primarily focuses on mathematics and sciences, my primary goal is to get students to understand not just how a problem works, but why that problem works, as it will offer a deeper level of comprehension. For the longest time in school, I was bored out of my mind because I didn't relate to the topics I was learning. It wasn't until my high school physics teacher began explaining the principles of physics in terms of real world applications that I started to enjoy learning. As someone who has always been very athletic, I love spending my time outdoors, doing activities such as rock-climbing, mountain biking, and skiing. Over time, I've started viewing the world as mathematical, physical, and chemical relationships that all intertwine, and this has truly led me deeper into my studies. I started to understand the physical relationships that governed my control over a mountain bike, and could write functions to describe the waves I was surfing on. At times I'll see a phenomena in nature and immediately put it into a mathematical expression in my head. This is the kind of learning I want to engrain in my students, because our world doesn't need more people who can plug and chug numbers into a formula. The world needs more people who truly understand their area of expertise and apply it to everything around them.
