Certified Tutor
I have recently finished teaching three courses of 8th-grade world history and two courses of 9th-grade history at Charles Wright Academy. With almost 10 years of diverse classroom teaching experience and several years of being a project leader for museums, I believe I would be a perfect fit to be your Varsity Tutor. I graduated with a Bachelors in Anthropology (Cultural Anthro emphasis on Pacific Island and Indigenous culture) and Dance (Hula, African, Latin and other folkloric forms) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2016. Moreover, I also am TEFL/TESOL Certified with over 160 hours of online theory and in-class practicums.
Before graduating from Hawaii, I had worked in several departments across many schools that would be considered at risk. My greatest accomplishment was also my most challenging experience with the underserved youth from the aforementioned schools. I had the opportunity to lead them on several cultural exchange programs that vary from an emphasis on the performing arts to creating video ethnologys of a foreign culture. Traveling with over 30 kids already has its challenges, but when we throw in the added variables of the political climate or language barriers of Guatemala, Guyana and Morocco, educated improvisation became a powerful tool to our success. I lived in many of the aforementioned countries, by doing so, I was able to be the bridge that connected youth from the USA to explore museums and art schools at an international level.
During my time with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), I taught world history, U.S. history, ethnic history, filmmaking, video editing, world dance, world music ensemble, Japanese writing systems, English as a Second Language, American Sign Language, Spanish conversation, culinary arts and martial arts! I am excited at the thought to teach any of the above-mentioned again in some capacity to any grade levels. Based on my academic and professional career, I by no means follow the conventional path for an educator. That is why people closest to me call me a renaissance man. However, I train in many disciplines so that I may impact as many youths as possible.
