I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Benjamin: Lower East Side tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Northwestern University in June 2016 with a degree in Journalism. Despite my degree, I plan to spend the rest of my career working in the field of education.

This past year I worked as a full-time tutoring fellow for a non-profit organization called SAGA Innovations. Essentially, I tutored 9th and 10th-grade students in Algebra 1 and Geometry at a school on the South Side of Chicago. I formed positive relationships with all of my students and I look forward to returning to the same school next year.

The thing I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing the look on my students' faces when they understand a difficult concept and are able to solve problems independently.

There are a few reasons why I believe I'm a successful tutor. For one, I'm able to break down complex problems so they are a lot easier to solve. Once students realize that "difficult" problems aren't really as tough as they seem, their confidence increases and they start to enjoy the subject matter a lot more.

Secondly, I think I do a really nice job making math problems relatable. A common complaint from students when it comes to math is that they don't think they'll ever need to use certain topics in "real life." With me, I don't see this being a problem, because I use things that my students are interested in - like sports or fashion - and include them in problems so that they become a lot more invested in finding out the answers.

Lastly, I think I do a good job getting along with students of all age groups, because it wasn't that long ago that I was in their shoes, as a middle or high school student, so I'm able to relate to them on a personal level.

Outside of tutoring, I love watching sports and trying new places to eat. I also try to stay as active as possible.

Feel free to contact me at any time, and I look forward to working with you!
