Why do I tutor? Simply, I do it because I enjoy it. When I tutor math, I always ask the student(s) which method would best solve the problem at hand. If they have an answer, I ask them why the method they chose is the best; if they don't, I ask them if there is something they don't understand so I can explain it to them. I also tend to give them hints or I rephrase the questions I ask them so they can hear it differently and maybe formulate an answer more easily. Strangely, I have found that some of the strategies I use in tutoring math can also be used effectively in tutoring other subjects; for example, I always ask the student what they???re working on in class at the moment and I ask them to explain it to me. I then react according to what their response is, personalizing the session for each student. This is also a way for me to know exactly where they???re at with a particular topic or paper they???re working on. In a summary, my primary objective as a tutor, regardless of the subject, is to understand the students??? needs and understanding of their assignment.
