What is your teaching philosophy?

Students who are personally motivated are the most likely to succeed. In teaching, I try my best to help a student build their own enthusiasm for conquering the subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd take the first session to get to know a student and their preferred ways of learning, and to find methods that work for the two of us.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'd show a student the best methods for independent discovery.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd help a student stay motivated with regular check-ins, assessments, and encouragement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd break the concept down into manageable chunks to teach each chunk individually.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I'd share my tricks for reading comprehension assessments and work on reading technique.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Build a rapport with the student individually, and not with their parent.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'd show the student the benefits of their mastery of the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'd have the student teach me a subset of the concept or teach another student.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By continuously increasing the difficulty of assessments, starting from a very simple base.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

With diagnostic exams.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I'd try various techniques to find the best fit.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I'll use handouts, review books, and videos.
