Twaina

Certified Tutor

As a high school student I began to tutor fellow students at my school. I have always enjoyed helping people. While obtaining my bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College in psychology, I tutored at the student center part-time. After graduation, I started working as a paraprofessional with Clayton County Schools and continued to tutor students in the after school program. I became more passionate about learning when I became a parent of a son who struggled in school. We worked diligently on his school work, but he continued to struggle.

After being told my son needed an individual educational plan, I went into learning mode. I went about learning as much as I could about special education and techniques to help my son as I could. This created a new passion for learning and helping other students that struggled like my son. In my fourth year of education, I decided to go back to school and obtain my Masters in Education with a concentration in Special Education. After graduation I began teaching special education in Georgia the year of 2012. I have worked with high school students, middle school, and elementary students in my 5 years as a special education teacher here in Atlanta. I enjoy helping students learn and be successful in their own way. It is an awesome feeling when students finally learn a concept that they have struggled with and when you help a student have success, you help build confident students.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is the belief that all children desire to learn and be successful. As an educator passionate about student success, I exercise patience and encouragement in working with students. I believe students must be provided individualized support and praise as they accomplish each milestone or goal, no matter how small. I also believe educators, specialists, and family members must stay connected, to encourage the success of students, both in and outside of the classroom. I truly appreciate and learn from every experience with a child and their family.
