What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is that when the teacher and student work together anything is possible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first thing I would do is discuss with the student how they feel they learn best. After that, we will discuss their current needs and jump right in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving the student the tools they need to learn in a way that works for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would bring in relevance and conversations that would keep the interest high.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would look for a different way to approach the topic. There are so many different ways to teach each concept. After that, I would take a break from it and then come back in fresh.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The best thing I can do is help the student talk through the story or passage. If I can prompt the student towards the answer, then he/she will be less likely to struggle.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that learning about the student, as well as sharing information about myself helps to make it more successful.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Again, relevance is the key to struggling students. If they are interested in the topic, they will be much more interested.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use red light/green light check-ins and exit tickets.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By giving positive praise and encouragement. Really relishing in the successes.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Exit tickets, discussions, and short quizzes.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I need to be able to change any aspect of my tutoring in order to help the student. It depends on the need.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use reading materials, highlighters, and sticky notes.
