Sara
Certified Tutor
I graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Interdisciplinary Studies, followed a Master’s degree in Forensic Behavior Analysis; all the while tutoring in the university’s student-athlete learning center. Since graduation I have mainly worked as an independent contractor in home support for Alzheimer’s patients and child care. While also working part time as a pool attendant in a country club and tutoring in essay and paper writing. I tutor in a broad range of topics, but most passionate about English, Writing, and Psychology. In my experience helping a struggling student overcome an obstacle and become confident in their new found skills is a very rewarding experience. I am a firm proponent of learning, believing it to be necessary for every aspect of life; for every new skill and knowledge learned, no matter how slight, can change a person’s outlook on life. As such, I hope that each student I work with can experience a measure of this discovery for themselves.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During the first session with a student, it is important to introduce ourselves and discuss expectations of the short and long-term goals of the tutoring encounters or create them together by discussing problems or concerns with previous assignments. I do this along with establishing a standard, for both myself and the student, as to what is expected during each session.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that the role of a teacher/tutor is to provide opportunities for continual learning and growth, for both the student and myself. To cultivate a safe learning environment, provide tools for the continuation of learning for the student, not only the subject at hand but also for future situations. Finally, I believe that teaching the student to challenge themselves continuously and take that skill to other aspects of their life, not just their education.
