Kiana
Certified Tutor
I like literature and performing arts most in life. I tend to incorporate both into classes to blend into textbook work. If you're looking for a more creative approach to language, that's what I provide. I have plenty of books and media that I've used myself to further my own studies.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in going with the flow of nature. One must walk before they can run and crawl before they can walk.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to know personal preferences, so a fun personality test will be given.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to hint at study skills throughout the course, ranging from note-taking to what exams look for.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
As a goal-oriented person, I like to keep track of progress. I like to remind students of just how much they've improved.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
There are different types of learning styles. If lectures don't work, perhaps hands-on training? If not, maybe examples?
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Comprehension is directly related to questions. I like to have students practice asking questions.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Building a relationship is just as important in teaching as it is in business.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
To create excitement, subjects must correlate to interests. Once I find out, I work hard to blend them.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Practice makes perfect.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I always let students know the details of their improvement.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I consider a combination of student interests, environment and ability when evaluating their needs.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I rely on the wealth of material I've gathered over my years of teaching. I'm prepared for diverse learners.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Audio/Visual media and text are always a part of my classes.
