What is your teaching philosophy?

Examples, practice, and context. First, we can work through a problem together, and I'd like to provide lots of examples of how the process we just learned can be applied in other situations. After this, we can practice them together, or independently, depending on the student's preference. Finally, if there's time, my favorite teaching technique is to relate what the student is learning to a current-day problem or situation and work through it together. It's easier to learn when you know how it may be applied to something in real life!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It's definitely up to student what we focus on in a first session. From my perspective, it's important for the student to get sufficient time to describe what they are struggling with, and then we as a team can make a plan for tackling the issue in our sessions and meeting their goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

As a tutor, I like to walk through examples with students and then have them do a few on their own. It's imperative that some of that knowledge is put to the test before the end of the tutoring session so any errors can be corrected!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I really appreciate bringing classroom learning into a real-life context. I try my best to take the course material that we're working on and having examples ready of how what we're learning relates to something in the world around us.
