What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy focuses on the importance of adopting multiple teaching strategies. An innovative, flexible approach allows me to help a wide variety of students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I talk with a student to evaluate her goals, her areas of concern, and her personal strengths.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My students become independent learners because I help guide them on strategies for helping themselves. I never do the work for my students. Instead, I guide them through their work in order to teach them how to complete future work on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My students stay motivated because I show them their progress as we work. When students recognize and celebrate their success, they are more inclined to stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Present the skill or concept in a new way.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student to get excited about a difficult subject by showing them how the subject is relevant to their interest.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Brief, low-stakes quizzes and short review sessions.
